Celebrate spring
at Maple Keys
March heralds the arrival of
maple syrup season at the Maple
Keys Sugar Bush near Ethel. The
Maitland Valley Conservation Au
thority (MVCA) provides an oppor
tunity for people to experience the
sights and sounds of syrup produc
tion.
Maple Keys will be open from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. starting March 11
through to April 7, weather per
mitting. A visit to Maple Keys is a
great March break or Easter week
end family activity. Admission to
Maple Keys is free.
Visitors can explore the self
guiding trail which explains both
past and present methods of maple
syrup production. Historical dis
plays show how syrup production
has changed over the years. MVCA
staff will also be on hand to discuss
boiling and canning procedures in
the evaporator house.
Guided tours of the sugar bush
are available to groups for a
nominal fee. Contact the MVCA at
335-3557 for more information.
Maple syrup is a pure natural
product with no preservatives add
ed. Syrup from Maple Keys is
available for sale (subject to availa
bility) in a wide variety of sizes
along with other maple products
(butter, jelly and candy) from local
producers.
On March 23 and 24 Maple Keys
will be the site of Pancake Week
end festivities. Pancake meals will
be available from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. Guided tours of the sugar
bush will be offered along with a
variety of children’s activities.
Sunday, March 24 will feature
media-council competitions with
local teams competing for the
infamous Maple Madness trophy.
In addition to syrup production,
Maple Keys is also an interesting
site for nature walks and wildlife
viewing. The property contains a
variety of natural communities
which support a mixture of wildlife
including, white tailed deer,
muskrats, and cottontail rabbits. A
bird feeding program was started
this winter so visitors are encour
aged to stop at the feeders and
watch the antics of the chickadees,
nutchatches and woodpeckers.
The Maple Keys Sugar Bush is
located 4.5 km. south of Moles-
worth at the corner of Sideroad 30
and Concession 3-4 of Grey Town
ship.

Grey Central School students have some new musical instruments thanks to generous donations
from two area service clubs. Dave Stephenson, Brussels Optimist President, left and Lions
president Neil McGavin get some instruction from Bob Baynton, second from left, and David
Proulx. The pieces purchased are called Orff instruments. Mr. McGavin tries out the bass
metallophone while Mr. Stephenson is shown how to play the bass xylophone.
