The Citizen, 1991-02-27, Page 7Looking Backward COMPILED BY TRACY FINCH FIVE YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 26,1986 The Brussels Guides and Brown­ ies held their annual mother and daughter banquet, to celebrate the birthday of the founder of Guiding and Scouting Lord and Lady Baden- Powell. The guests who attended the banquet were Donna Tumey, District Commissioner, Betty Gra­ ber the badge tester and Marion Doucette the puppeteer. A pot luck supper was enjoyed by all. Sandra Hessels and her brother David were chosen as king and queen of the winter carnival at the Blyth Public School. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Smith, Murray and Paula arrived home after enjoying a holiday in Orlando, Florida. Nearly 500 people toured the new bam of Ross and Ruth Veitch in Grey township on Friday and nearly 100 more on Saturday when guests from Garden City, Michigan were given a tour. FEBRUARY 24,1988 THREE YEARS AGO Greatly missed by all are Dave and Janet McCutcheon who went out of business. They carried on from Dave’s parents Jack and Marg, giving their service and delivering to the people of Brussels over the years. Tanya Boonstoppel of Auburn and Christina Roulston were among the Ontario students who ■ left for a three-month exchange to homes in Quebec. They were completing the return visit after Quebec students spent three months here in the fall. Tanya travelled to Famham, Quebec to visit Pascale McLean. Christina reached Riviere Portneuf where her exchange partner, Marie Eve Bou­ chard lives, after her flight was delayed by bad weather. The Central Huron Secondary School Music Club made plans to head to Bermuda for a Music Tour. To make it easier for the students to raise the much needed funds, they arranged a "Pizza Making Spree” to sell and deliver to the people of the community. Elaine Scrimgeour’s dream of turning an historic Dinsley Street house in Blyth into a home for small shops was nearing its finish as workmen put the finishing touches to the inside of the building. Forum on family health care planned The Kids and Us program in the Wingham area is sponsoring a family health care evening for all ages on Tuesday, March 5, from 8 - 10 in the downstairs meeting room of the Wingham United Church. A panel of health care profes­ sionals will be present to answer questions and offer information regarding health care concerns from infancy to the senior years. Topics included are: pregnancy, caring for a newborn, raising healthy toddlers, elementary school age children, adolescent/ teen years, parenting, private nurs­ ing and home care and the senior years. "All family members from birth to the elderly share health con­ cerns,” said organizer Rita Rice Bowers. "This evening is set up as a community event in which all age groups are invited to participate. We welcome families to attend. It will be a very informal evening so come with any questions you might have.” Ms. Rice Bowers said that pre­ pared questions are welcomed and will be given to the panel members. ONE YEAR AGO FEBRUARY 28,1990 Brenda Nesbitt and Tanya John­ ston graduated from the Ontario Police College in Aylmer. They have been employed as police cadets with the Metropolitan Police Force. Brenda will be transferring to the Clinton Police Department while Tanya remains in Toronto. John Bos and Raymond Verburg left for the Dominican Republic with 18 other people where they volunteered their construction skills for two weeks to help build a church. Both are members of the Christian Reformed Church in Blyth. The Legion public speaking con­ test between Blyth Public School and Hullett Central was held at Hullett. Jodee Medd of Blyth took first place in the intermediate division while Jason Dalton came in second and Kimberley Richmond and Ryan Chamney tied for third. The profits Brussels Public stu­ dents collected from selling maga­ zine subscriptions was spent on student funds and needs of their classrooms. The class with the top sales won a six-metre sundae.
