IOOF Grand Master visits Presentation Harold Usher, District Governor of Toastmasters Interna­ tional presents the charter for the Maitland Motivators Toastmasters Club to club president Allan Dettweller at Charter Night for the new club in Brussels Saturday. Representatives of many Toastmasters Clubs journeyed to Brussels to help the new club celebrate. MP speaks at Toastmasters The Maitland Motivators Toast­ master Club of Brussels held their Charter Presentation Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Brussels Legion. The highlight of the evening was when District Governor, Harold Usher DTM presented the club with their charter on behalf of Toastmasters International. Club President, Allan Dettweiler accept­ ed the charter on behalf of the club, which was established to help its members improve their communi­ cation skills and leadership abili­ ties. Following a delicious meal serv­ ed by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brussels Legion, Frank Procter, a member of the Maitland Motiva- Public speaking contest at Legion tonight BY SANDRA JOSLING On Wednesday, February 27 at 8 p.m., there will be a Public Speaking contest at the Brussels Legion. Speeches will be from students of Grey Central School and the Brussels Public School. There are two divisions Junior (grades 4, 5, 6) and Senior (7,8). There will be one winner chosen from each division. These winners will then continue to the Zone finals held in Clinton March 2. Everyone is welcome to attend. On Sunday, March 17 there will be a St. Patrick’s Day Ribs and Kraut dinner served at the Brussels Legion. Meals will be served from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door only. Everyone is invited. A motion was passed at the General meeting to donate from the tors spoke on the Canadian Iden­ tity. The keynote speaker for the evening was Steve Holloway CTM, President of the Forest City Toast­ masters, London. Mr. Holloway delivered an inspirational speech on his topic, “Never Give Up’’. Special Guest Murray Cardiff, M.P. Huron, brought greetings to the newly chartered club. Mr. Cardiff shared a few of his early and sometimes humorous experi­ ences as a member of the House of Commons. Toastmasters from Elmira, Kit­ chener, Waterloo, Cambridge and London attended the evening events. Nevada account $50 to the Optimist Club for ice time. Results from the Monday Night Mixed darts on February 18 are as follows: Lawrence Machan, Mary Ross, Martha Logan, first. Barb Fischer, Bill Nethery and Wally Mason, second. High shooter for the ladies are Barb Elliott (120) and for the men Dave Adams (140). Darts are held every Monday at 8 p.m. Oops! There was an error in last week’s Brussels People column. In the item on Jeff Huether’s hockey playing exploits Jeff’s father Dave Huether’s name was unfortunately erroneously reported as another name. We apologize for the error. On Thursday, Feb. 14 Grand Master Cecil Brown, Grand Master of the Independent Order of Odd­ fellows paid a visit to District No. 8 1.0.O.F. Brussels. He was entertained by Mel and Lois McCutcheon, Brussels. Mel is District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 8 1.0.0.F. Mr. Brown arrived on Feb. 13 and with Mr. McCutcheon visited sick, shut-in and elderly Rebekahs and Oddfellows throughout the District. On Thursday, Feb. 14 a dinner in his honour was held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall in Brussels. Eighty-three Oddfellows and Rebe­ kahs with their wives, husbands and friends attended despite the inclement weather. After a deli­ cious dinner served by the ladies of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, a program took place. Throughout the evening the Royal Canadian Legion Pipe Band gave short Band selections led by Donald Dunbar acting as Pipe Major. Mr. McCutcheon then introduc­ ed the dignitaries at the head table. Last March Healy won the trip to the United Nations at the annual speak-off in Clinton. The I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Lodges of Ontario are the only organization to sponsor a visit like this. They want to make the youth of the country aware of the importance of the United Nations Assembly, espe­ cially now, with the world siuation the way it is. These young people are the one’s who someday will carry the torch. Every effort is made to establish a visit with the country of first choice. However, placements are subject to host family availability and are not made in areas experiencing political and civil instabilities. Also Brussels Lions are looking for families who would be interested in hosting a young person from another country.
