The Citizen, 1991-02-20, Page 21THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1991. PAGE 21. Residents object to village’s bill for cellar drain repair A ratepayer’s attempt to have the village pick up part of the costs for fising a cellar drain got little support from Blyth village council lors Wednesday night. Bruce Mason, Jim Mason and Irma Mason appeared before coun cil, objecting to a bill sent to them for repairs to a drain from the cellar of Bruce’s house. Village employ ees had originally tried to help find a blockage in the drain using a snake from the Mason basement. Later, when trouble seemed to be located on the side of Coombs St. Blyth students enjoy snow walk SNOW WALK, SNOW TALK by Charlene Hulzebos On Tuesday, February 12, the grade 1 and 2 classes went to Wawanosh Conservation Area. The classes went in the morning by bus at 9 a.m. and returned back at 12 noon. When they got there they were accompanied by their leader Jean. Some activities they did were: walked around looking for Business and Professional Directory on village property a contractor was brought in to try to solve the problem. Eventually a bill from the contractor for $576.17 plus a bill for $43 for village employees’ time supervising the job was sent to Bruce Mason. But Mr. Mason objected to the bill. He said the work could have been done much more cheaply if he hadn't been forced to hire a contractor. He said the village employees could supervise the work but he could have done it himself. He objected to the amount animal tracks, looked in magnify ing glasses and had tons of fun. The adults that went were Mrs. Armstrong-Gibson the Grade 2 teacher, Sharon Brown and Jeanette Harris, Mrs. Battye - the Grade 1 teacher and Betty Lewis. Ryan Lee and Anthony deBoer said they had a fun time and were tired out when they returned back to B.P.S. of gravel ordered, for instance. But councillors noted the material taken out was of such poor quality it couldn’t have been put back into the hole without causing even more problems. The Mason family complained they had wanted several years ago to hook into another drain in the area but had been told by village employees then they couldn’t. But councillors argued that neither of the two drains in the area are owned by the village, even though they are both on village property. The present village administration doesn’t know where either drain came from. “It’s not our responsibility to drain your basement,” Councillor Dave Lee told the family. Reeve Albert Wasson said the mystery of these old private drains is part of the reason the new policy in people to fix problems and village if they must work on village property. “We have no authority to tell you to hook onto drains,” he village adopted a which it calls on their own drain only involve the BLAKE GENERAL Septic Tank Service Fast Efficient 24 Hour Service CALL RAY 887-6800 said. Bruce Mason said he wouldn’t be unhappy if the village agreed to pay for half the cost of the repairs. It was quickly obvious his proposal wasn’t winning support from coun cillors, however. “How do I justify paying for half the drain?” Counci- Obituaries DONNA I.
