Leuenberger, left, of the Brussels Figure Skating Brussels Atoms lead second playoff series After eliminating Drayton in the first round of their WOAA Atom playoffs, Brussels Atoms have taken a two-game lead over Howick in their best of five second round series. Brussels took an early lead and maintained it through the game as they scored a 4-2 win in Howick Wednesday night. Craig Thompson scored two first period goals to give Brussels the lead. Corey Newman assisted on the first and Andrew Exel on the second. Howick rebounded with a goal in the second to tighten up the score but Corey Campbell scored from Steve Machan and Chad McCallum early in the third to fatten the lead again. Howick came back two minutes later with their second goal but Andrew Exel scored from Corey Newman and Josh Beuer­ man to seal the victory for Brus­ sels. Solid goaltending by Jamie Thomas kept Brussels in the game during the first period of the second game, played in Brussels Sunday. Brussels ended with a 2-0 victory. First with 41.5 points was the team of Brad Speiran, Annette Lewington, Brian Warwick and Merle Hoegy; second, 41 points; Wayne Lowe, Fran Bremner, Frank Breckenridge, and Steve Steiss; third, 40.5 points Bob Alexander, Ruth Bauer, Corrie Sholdice and Rodney Bauer. The second draw of the Tuesday afternoon Ladies Curling Club also ended recently. The winning teams were: first, 46.5 points, Evelyn Blake, Mary Bernard, Bonnie Cole Arnal and Bev Stevenson; second, 33.5 points, Brenda Linton, Mary Ann Miners, Velma Locking and Thea Rhijkoff; third, 32 points, Valerie Shortreed, Agnes Wharton, Doris Mitchler and Jean Bewley. Blyth Recognition Pee Wees open WOAA Dale Newman, chairman of the recreation presents Karen Hastings with a token of the appreciation. Karen has been secretary of the committee for 15 plus years, but has resigned due to work commitments. She has been replaced by Rhonda Fischer. committee, committee’s ‘E’ semi-finals BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees played a single game last week as they opened their WOAA Pee Wee “E” semi-final series against Wallace. The team travelled to Kurtzville on February 13 where they were outplayed by the home team in a 5-0 loss. The emotion and intensity was missing from Blyth’s play as they were outclassed by the Wallace team. Game two was in Blyth on Monday while game three of this best of five series is in Wallace tonight.
