The Citizen, 1991-02-20, Page 11County council briefs THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1991. PAGE 11. Huronview downsizing postponed by construction delays The downsizing of Huronview to get the number of residents of the present Huronview down to the capacity of the two new, smaller homes to be constructed later this year has been delayed due to the delay in construction. Wayne Lester, administrator of the seniors home told Huron Coun ty Council Feb. 7 that although it had been planned to reduce the size of the home to the capacity of the new homes by Dec. 1990, because the new homes won’t be ready until 1992 instead of the original target date of 1991, there was no need to push as fast to reduce the population. The current staff is the right size for the 235 population, he said. But Lossie Fuller, Deputy Reeve of Exeter wondered why, since county council had agreed the size would be reduced to 200 by Dec. 1990, the decision to change the schedule hadn’t been brought back to county council. Mr. Lester agreed that the decision wasn’t brought back to county council and it should have been.***** Payment of part of the architect fees for Huronview North and Huronview Central was approved by the Huronview Committee of Management. The committee agreed to pay 80 per cent of the first 50 per cent of the architects fee for the Huronview North pro ject, amounting to $175,825. The committee approved payment of half of the first half of the architect’s fee on the Central building, amounting to $163,312.50.***** Some county councillors were not pleased to learn they are paying the medical director of Huronview to attend to patients that aren’t there anymore. The councillors learned the medical director is paid $5 per month per bed, based on the designated bed capacity of the home for the aged by the province. Huronview, however, has been getting smaller for several years but still has the same designated capacity. “This is nothing new”, said Tom Tomes, Reeve of Stephen and former chairman of the Huronview board. “For 10 years we’ve been overpaying the man”. However, he said, other counties are paying 50 per cent more than Huron is to medical directors. Stanley Reeve Howard Arm strong noted that there are many things a medical director does that he doesn’t get paid for. Bill Mickle, Reeve of Exeter said he was concerned “we’re losing the ability to manage if our hands are tied (by a provincial ruling stating the amount the director gets paid per bed). “If you’re under restraints from the Ministry there’s not much you can do.” As of Feb. 1 the rate increased to $5.28 per bed, empty or full.***** Attendance at the Huron County Museum reached 28,894 at year end, well ahead of projections for the success of the museum when the new museum was built. Meanwhile the official amalga mation of the Huron County Jail GET CASH! Sell Anythng With WAXTADS into the Museum will be delayed for several weeks pending a com plete audited statement from the Jail Board.***** Huron County Council has joined the list of those in the county pressing for a new Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office for the county. Marie Hicknell, chair man of the Agriculture and Proper ty Committee noted a memo had been located that showed the opening of new offices in Lambton and Huron were to have been last year. Lambton, she said, had got its new office but Huron was still without a new office. She noted there are many agricultural meet ings that have to be turned away from the Clinton OMAF office because it is just too busy.***** The county has given confirma tion in writing to the Huron Day BLYTHWILSON’S Health & Gift Centre Centre for the Homebound that it might be considered as a future occupant of the Summer Hill of Huronview, now unused. There has been discussion for some time that the Day Centre might be moved to the area but the official confirma tion will allow the Centre to commission an architectural study into the feasibility of such a move. ***** Huron County will swallow the legal costs of its battle with Exeter over planning in return for Exeter dropping its court appeal. Exeter had argued it shouldn’t have to pay for planning services from Huron since it had retained its own planning department after a dispute with a neighbouring municipality. The dispute, which dragged on for years, finally had a court ruling in the county’s favour last summer but Exeter had threat ened to appeal the decision. Last 523-4440 meeting had seen an agreement reached with Exeter on the future use of the county planning depart ment by Exeter. ***** Because of the convention of the Small Urban Municipalities section of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, the May meeting of council will be moved to Tuesday, April 30.
