Recycled tree When Betty Graber of Brussels removed the ornaments from her tree after Christmas, she decided it was still too nice to throw out so she kept it and decorated it again for her birthday on February 14. The tree was purchased from the Leo Club. Pipe Band names new executive BY SANDRA JOSLING On February 7 the annual meet­ ing for the Brussels Legion Pipe Band was held. Nominations were held with the following members standing to take office: Mary Lou Johnston, President; Ross Bennett, Vice Pre­ sident; Elizabeth Proctor, Secre­ tary-Treasurer; Tom MacFarlane, Drum Major; Don Dunbar, Pipe Major; Patti Knight, Drum Ser­ geant; Murray Bone, Pipe Ser­ geant; John Lowe, Drum Corp.; Mary Anne Scott, Pipe Corp. The Pipe Band also has openings Kang, Young, Angie and Chris­ tine Yoon have returned from a three-day Fantasy Carnival cruise. They sailed from Miama and travelled to Nassau. Kang was participating in a professional pharmacy conference on board ship. They also visited Orlando and Disney World before flying home. Becky McLachlan is home from hospital and back to school. The local flower shops had excellent sales for Valentine’s Day. One example was the local bank where the tellers’ stations had fordrummers and pipers. The Pipe Band will give instruction to any­ one wishing to learn how to play. There is no age limit. The meetings and practices are held every Thurs­ day night at the Legion from 8 - 10 p.m. Anyone interested can contact the Legion for more information. Results from the Monday, Feb. 11 mixed darts were: Kathy Cochrane and Paul Willie, first; Cam Ross, Colleen Martin and Bill Little second. High Shooter for the ladies was Barb Elliott (174) and for the men Alex Henderson (145). Local Brownies, Guides, Beav- vers, Cubs and Scouts attended Melville Presbyterian Church on Sunday in celebration of Thinking Week and Lord and Lady Baden- Powell’s birthdays on February 22. Members of each group took part in the service. The Rev. Cam and Barbara McMillan and members of the Brussels and Ethel congregations attended St. John’s United Church in Stratford on Sunday evening to hear the Right Reverend Dr. Wal­ ter Farquharson, Moderator of the United Church of Canada, who was visiting Huron-Perth Presbytery. His sermon stressed the impor­ tance of not being afraid to venture into the wilderness. The service was conducted by Muriel Coultes, Chairperson of Huron-Perth Pres­ bytery. Joe Seili and Ellwood Seili joined a four-day bus trip to the Louisville National Farm Show in Kentucky last week. The show now has 90,000 more square feet than ever before. Unlike some Canadian shows, Joe says admission and parking are free. Walking around the show was definitely a two-day walk in order to see everything. Local bird watchers report that their feeders are finally receiving visits from purple and green finch­ es who enjoy both nijer and sunflower seeds. Nuthatches, woodpeckers, chickadees and blue jays are also in the area. The suet balls from Thompson’s Meat Mar­ ket are popular as well. A reader notes that she woke up to the joyful song of a song sparrow from his favourite lilac bush on Friday, February 15. Students from the local schools have been enjoying skating at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Com­ munity Centre as part of their physical education programme. Jeff Huether as player and Dave Hastings as coach have received a special 1990 Civic Citation from the City of Brampton for winning the 1990 Ontario Minor Hockey Asso­ ciation Novice “AAA” Champion­ ship, winning all seven “AAA” Hockey Tournaments and for winn­ ing the North American Silver Stick Novice “AAA” Championship in St. Clair Shores Michigan. They had a season record of 76 wins, 4 losses and 5 ties. Jeff also received a second civic award for being a member of the Ontario Minor Tyke baseball 1990 champions. Congratulations to Amy Thomas and Ainsley Wilson who won high point trophies in their respective divisions at the Wingham Cana- dettes Freestyle Competition last week. Shannon White and Erin Mitchell earned badges at the competition. This was a very busy weekend in the community. On Saturday, there was the annual Minor Hockey Pub Night and the 25th wedding anni­ versary celebration of Sharon and Fred Stephenson. On Sunday, the local Guide, Brownie, Cub and Scout movement commemorated Thinking Day, in honour of the organization’s founders, Lord and THE HERITAGE PUZZLER CONTEST!! X WIN $50.00 CASH Lady Baden-Powell. Sunday was also the Inter-Club Figure Skating competition hosted by the Brussels Chib. Skaters from Seaforth, St. Marys, Stratford, Wingham, Monkton, Mitchell, Milverton, Lucknow, Listowel, Goderich, Bay­ field, Clinton, Blyth and Brussels participated. While the stormy weather condi­ tions did decrease attendance at the Saturday night functions there were still many who braved the snow and cold. The drive home was, to say the least, interesting. Between Walton and Brussels there were six cars in the ditch. On Sunday, Brad Moore and his wife Sherrie of Mitchell visited at the Gropp’s. Sherrie coaches six of the young skaters who were partici­ pating in the inter-club competi­ tion. She teaches in St. Marys, Stratford and Listowel. Congratulations to Reverend David Fuller and his wife Debbie on the arrival of their new baby son, Matthew, a little brother for Sarah. ATTENTION YOUNG PEOPLE The Brussels Lions Club is once again wishing to sponsor Youth ages 16 to 21 to participate in the Lions International Youth Exchange Program. Every effort is made to establish a visit with the country of first choice. However, placements are subject to host family availability and are not made in areas experiencing political and civil instabilities.
