Crusaders defeat Monkton, Drayton for perfect week On Friday, Jan. 25, the Crusa­ ders travelled to Arthur for a game against the Tigers. Brussels opened the scoring just over two minutes into the period when Brian Campbell and Brian Ten Pas set up Ken Cousins for a goal. Arthur, however came back a minute later to tie the game. The Crusaders regained the lead when Ken Cousins and Mike Smith drew assists on a Brian Ten Pas goal. Cousins made it a two-goal lead when he finished off a setup by Brian Campbell and Dave Stephenson. Arthur however, came back again with two goals of their own to make the score 3-3 after one period. The Tigers scored in the first minute of the second to take their first lead but it was short-lived as Brian Campbell scored to tie the game with Ken Higgins and Paul Montgomery drawing assists on the goal. Brussels then regained the lead four minutes later when Jason Goodall scored on a scramble around the net with Kevin Deitner and Jamie Robinson getting the assists. However, Arthur came back with three goals before the period ended to take a 7-5 lead after two periods. Arthur increased their lead to two goals early in the third period before Kevin Deitner scored for Brussels to cut the lead back to two goals with Paul Robinson and Brian Ten Pas getting assists on the goal. That was as close as they got though, as Arthur added one more goal to make the final 9-6 for them. Saturday, Jan. 26 saw the Cru­ saders at home to play Monkton. Brussels school news by Jennifer Machan and Brad Mulvey On Tuesday, January 22 Grades 6, 7 and 8 went to Talisman Mountain Resort to include down­ hill skiing in their physical educa­ tion program. An excellent experience was enjoyed by all the students al­ though several were overheard complaining about stiffness and tired muscles the next day. Thanks to the supervising teach­ ers: Mrs. Lindsay, who prepared us with the French skiing unit, Mr. Parsons, Mr. Wanless and Mrs. Raymond, and our special guest supervisors, Jamie Thomas, Mrs. Hutchins and Bruce Raymond. Our bus driver was Bob Tyerman. Thanks, Bob. On Thursday, January 24, Brus­ sels Public School hosted a drama workshop for Grades 7 and 8 students from the North Huron schools - Grey Central, Wingham, East Wawanosh, Turnberry, How- ick and Brussels. About forty students attended and were introduced to many aspects of drama by five instruc­ tors, drama teachers from F.E. Madill Secondary School, Exeter Secondary School, Central Huron Secondary School and Goderich District Collegiate Institute. The Brussels students who at­ tended were enthused and felt that it was a very worthwhile experi­ ence. They were Victoria Richards, Heather Somers, Andy Overholt, Becky Davidson, Ryan McLaughlin and Dylan Hutchins. This week all students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 are busy preparing for this year’s Science Fair. Topics have been chosen and Science Consultant Wavne Stewart has been here several times to guide them to the best project they can plan and assemble. Brussels started the scoring 42 seconds into the game when Rob Cardiff and Ken Cousins set up Dave Stephenson for the goal. They made it 2-0 just 36 seconds later when Jason Goodall scored on a play by Kevin Deitner and Chris King. Brussels added another to the margin when Cousins and Stephenson set up Brian Campbell for a goal. The Crusaders made it 4-0 when Campbell and Cousin set up Step­ henson for his second of the game. Just under a minute later Goodall and King set up Deitner for a goal. Brussels got its sixth goal with 20 seconds left in the period when Dave Harding and Goodall drew assists on King’s first goal. King and Goodall then set up Deitner for his second goal of the game with just five seconds left in the period to take a 7-0 lead after one period. Monkton didn’t give in as they scored three second period goals to cut the lead to four goals. Brussels regained a five-goal lead with 15 seconds left in the period when Stephenson and Cousins set up Campbell for his second of the game. The score after two periods was 8-3 in Brussels’ favour. Brussels made it a six-goal margin 45 seconds into the third when Rob Cardiff drew the only assist on Campbell’s third goal of the game. The Crusaders added another goal as Goodall and Harding set up Deitner for his third goal of the game. Brussels’ final goal came on a Deitner-Goodall setup for King’s second of the game. Monkton added one more to make the final score 11-4 for Brussels. On Saturday, Feb. 2, the Crusa­ ders were home again as they played host to the Drayton Comets. There was no scoring in the game until the second period was seven and a half minutes old and David Montgomery set up Jason Goodall for the first Crusader goal. They went up 2-0 just 61 seconds later when Ken Cousins drew the only assist on a goal by Kevin Deitner. Drayton cut the lead to one goal two minutes later. Brus­ sels regained their two goal lead two minutes after that with Cousins and Jamie Robinson drawing assists on a goal by Trev Pocaluy- ko. The Crusaders lead was 3-1 after two periods. The Crusaders took a three-goal lead halfway through the period when Goodall scored his second of the game with Montgomery and Pocaluyko getting the assists on the goal. The Crusaders rounded off the scoring with just one minute and 20 seconds left with Dave Harding and Robinson drawing assists on Deitner’s second goal of the game. Ron Smith had a strong game in net for the Crusaders allowing only one goal. The final score of the game was 5-1 in the favour of Brussels.
