The Citizen, 1991-02-06, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1991. Brussels Livestock changing hands Mar. 1 For the third time since long time owners Bruce and Ross Mc Call sold the business in May 1987, the stockyards in Brussels have once again changed hands. Leonard Gamble of Gamble and Rogers in Toronto will take over Brussels Livestock Incorporated, which he purchased from present owner Gordon Brindley, on March 1. He says he, his son Kip and the other person involved are going to work hard to provide efficient service to the customers and build the business to the best of their ability. No stranger to the business - Mr. Gamble has been in the livestock business for 37 years - he knows his predecessors at the Brussels Stockyards well and hopes to maintain the reputation for success it has had in the past. Ausable Bayfield plans dinner Plans are well underway for the second annual conservation dinner to be held on Thursday, April 25 at the South Huron Rec Centre in Exeter. The first dinner of its kind in the area was held in April of last year and proved to be very popular in providing a fun evening for a crowd of about 450 and at the same time gaining funds for a number of conservation and wildlife projects. The Ausable Bayfield Conserva tion Foundation and the Exeter Lions club are joining forces in sponsoring this year’s dinner. The 1990 dinner was sponsored jointly by the local Authority Foundation and the Ontario Federation of and five business Brussels The stockyards were started in the spring of 1958 by Hugh Pearson and Jack Bryans under the name of Brussels Livestock Ltd. In 1970 Bruce McCall partners purchased the changing the name to Stockyards Ltd. They operated an undercover capacity for cattle of 1,000 head and a maximum of 500 head of pigs. By 1980, this had reached 1500 for cattle and 2,800 for pigs. As its reputation grew so did the business. In the spring of 1974 Brussels Stockyards purchased the neighbouring business of Ernie Bach and turned it into pig sales. Later that year Mr. McCall’s son Ross joined the business as sales manager. In the fall of 1977 the stockyards Anglers and Hunters. The Foundation’s share of last year’s dinner is being used in updating the parking lot and pro viding accessibility for fishing for the physically handicapped at Mor rison Dam. This year’s dinner committee chairperson Carolyn Bradford says she hopes funds from the upcoming dinner would be enough to com plete the Morrison Dam project and further the Wheels to Nature program at Rock Glen at Arkona. Another project which Foundation monies will be used is extension of the student outdoor education pro grams at White Pine Woods at Parkhill. expanded once again, opening a new stocker and feeder bam to handle western cattle from Alberta, Saskatchewan arid British Colum bia, that arrived regularly. A major addition was begun in the late winter of 1980 at a cost of $200,000 plus. The investment included a new cattle ring, office facilities, lobby, new and larger lunchroom, as well as an extension to handle 2,000 cattle undercover at any time. Mr. McCall and his son bought out the other partners and formed a full-partnership, with Mr. McCall as president and Ross as treasurer. The organization was now handling $1.25 million per week on a year round basis, up from nine million dollars a year when Mr. McCall and his partners purchased it. On May 1, 1987 Brussels Stock- yards was sold to Klaus Henschel who later, with his wife Kristin, attempted to embezzle funds into a bank account in Germany and fled. They eventually turned themselves in when it became apparent that the money was frozen and they could not gain access to it, and the Stockyards were again for sale. The winning tender to purchase the facility from the creditors’ trustee in bankruptcy in late 1988 was Gordon (Harry) Brindley of Dungannon. Licensing delays post poned the business’s reopening" until the next year under the name Brussels Livestock Inc. Mr. Gamble became aware that the business was for sale last fall and bought it in December. The purchase interested him, he said, because he was well aware of the reputation of the stockyards. “I knew they handled lots of cattle and Huron County is the best farm area in Ontario. It seemed to work together.” NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING ' THE 115th ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS WILL BE HELD IN THE OFFICE BUILDING OF McKillop Mutual Insurance Company 91 Main Street, South, Seaforth, Ontario on WED., FEBRUARY 27, 1991 AT 1:30 PM -to receive and dispose of the 1990 financial and Auditor’s Reports. - to appoint Auditors. - to consider and enact proposed amendments to bylaw #43 - to transact any other business that may properly come before the meeting. -The retiring Directors are Donald McKercher, Alex Townsend and Lavern Godkin.
