With only eight players everyone had to play well, but they still lost by a close 5-3 score. Belmore opened the scoring only 1:15 into the game. Blyth retaliated 1:29 later with a goal by Joey Schmidt, with an assist going to Kyle Anderson. The rest of the period saw a lot of action at both ends but it ended in a 1-1 tie. The second period saw a lot of chances by both teams again, out Belmore got the break and scored two in a row. Before the end of the period Blyth got their chance with Kvle Anderson scoring to brine the game a little closer. Jeremy Van Amersfoort assisted on this one. Blyth came out flying in the third and scored early to tie the game. The combination of Kyle Anderson and Jeremy Van Amersfoort got this one also. Belmore scored at the 8:34 mark to put them ahead for the third time in the game. Blyth took a penalty at the 5:02 mark, with the lack of manpower the boys were tiring, but managed to kill the penalty. At the 2:04 mark Belmore managed another gcal and with Blyth tiring quickly the last couple of minutes were played in their end. Allan Gibbons. Blvth’s goal­ tender. played well and managed to keep Belmore from scoring anymore. The game ended a 5-3 score, but Blyth went home tired and satisfied with the night's performance. On Friday, Feb. 1 Blvth travelled to Milverton only to play a very strong team. Milverton scored three goals in the first and four goals in the second to give them a 7-0 lead. Ken McCallum and Matt McCall played super games on defence. Matt Elliott played an excellent game in net. This week the Sprouts travel to Belgrave for a 9:00 game on Saturday put Blyth on the scoreboard. But Milverton managed four more goals before the end of the period to give them an 11-1 win. Ron Ritchie, in the net for Flemings picked up the shut-out and was named M.V.P. for the game. The “C” division final featured Hensall against Howick. In a see-saw game with the lead chang­ ing hands several times, saw Hensall defeat Howick 6-4. Leroy Gould of Hensall, notching three points, was the game's M.V.P. The M.V.P.'s received vests from the Blvth Team's sponsor Radfords. The Howick Oldtimers received the Doug Ludwig Memorial Award as the least penalized team. Blyth Atoms split playoffs BLYTH 4, HENSALL 2 The Blyth Atoms started their playoff hopes on a positive note, by upsetting Hensall by the score of 4-2. Hensall opened the scoring early in the game, but Blyth replied minutes later with Jeff Cowan cashing in on a setup by Michael Courtney and Amanda Anderson. No goals were scored in the second period as both teams dis­ played good defence and strong goaltending, with Shane Burk­ holder doing a super job for Blyth. Blyth took a 2-1 lead early in the third period scoring on a power play with Jeff Coawn firing onte past the Hensall goaltender with assists going to Trent Richmond and Michael Courtney. However, Hensall tied the score minutes lator 2-2 with Mark Bell’s end-to-end rush. With six minutes left in the game Jeff Cowan displayed his great speed and scored on a break-away putting Blyth up 3-2 on an unassisted effort, a natural hat-trick for Jeff. Blyth's strong defence held on to the lead, the last five minutes with Blyth scoring an insurance goal with four seconds left, Michael Haggitt and Michael Ansley team­ ing up. It was a penalty-free game for Blyth. HENSALL 5 BLYTH 3 Game two took place back in Blvth Wednesday, January 30 and Hensall evened the series at one game apiece in this best of five. This see-saw battle showed Blyth getting off to a fast start with Michael Courtney opening the scoring on a setup by Darryl Bromley. However, Hensall tied the score minutes later and took the lead with the only goal in the second period. Blyth tied the score 2-2 early in the third period with Jeff Cowan finding a loose puck with the help of Michael Ansley. Hensall took the lead again with 6:42 on the clock but once again Blyth tied the game up at 3-3 one minute later. This time Trent Richmond banged in a shot, assist­ ed by Darryl Bromley and Michael Courtney. Hensall finished the game with two goals in the last three minutes for a final score of Hensall 5, Blyth 3. Blyth struggled in their game plan and came out a little flat, falling into many penalties. Scott Bromley played well in net for Blyth stopping a lot of rubber with Blyth being out-shot 2 to 1 all game. Blvth’s next home game will be Wednesday.
