PeeWees in playoffs BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees opened the playoffs against Hensall last week winning the opening game in Blyth 4-2, then upset 4-3 in game two at Hensall. In Blyth on Monday, January 28 Hensall opened the game scoring but Blyth closed out the first period with two goals in the dying seconds for a 2-1 lead. Ryan Chamney and Brad Ander son set up Jason Rutledge’s game tying goal with 38 seconds left in the first. Nineteen seconds later Jason Rutledge fed the puck to Rob Johnston at the point. Rob’s waist- high shot was then deflected past the Hensall goalie by Brad Ander son. Brad Anderson then gave Blyth a 3-1 lead with the only second period goal as his shot from a bad angle surprised the Hensall goal tender. Jason Rutledge also picked up his third point of the game with the assist. Hensall narrowed the lead to 3-2 as his screened shot found the mark. Seventeen seconds later Blyth completed their comeback with the tying goal. Brian McNichol drew the Hensall defenders to him, then passed the puck over to Ryan Chamney who flipped it over the sliding Hensall goalie. Hensall again took the lead late in the period and this power play proved to be the winner. Give Hensall full credit for this 4-3 victory as their inspired play coupled with Blyth’s lackadaiscal play evened the play-off series at one game apiece. The series concludes this week with game three in Hensall on Monday and game four in Blyth on Wednesday at 7 o’clock (tonight). QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Toronto Maple Leaf’s defenceman Brad Marsh, who has played only two of the Leafs last 30 games, comment ing on the banners at Maple Leaf Gardens demanding his return to the ice: “I haven't had time to Moving in Bulls player Marty Rutledge moves in to score, tying the game against the Wingham Ironmen 1-1 in the first period of Sunday’s home game. In the last game before playoffs the Bulls opted to sit some players, which may have been a fatal mistake as the Ironmen came on strong, defeating the Bulls 7-5. Ironmen strong-arm Bulls Brussels Bull Jeff McKee receiv ed both Rookie of the Year and Most Sportsmanlike Player and Marty Rutledge received both M.V.P. trophy plus top scorer at the Midwestern Jr. “C” Awards Night in Grand Valley Saturday. Sunday the Bulls opted to sit some players before playoffs, possibly a mistake as Wingham beat the Bulls 7-5. Justin Murray opened the scor ing at 13:40 on a pass from Chris Johnson and Brent Kavenaugh. Marty Rutledge got that goal back with assists going to Jason Baier and Jeff McKee. Chris Johnson scored from Justin Murray to close out the scoring in the first period with Wingham holding a 2-1 lead. Brian Zabel tied the score at 160:01 on a pass from Steve Michie. However, Ryan Gallaher scored at 13:09 with assist going to Justin Murray. Jason Moore scored the next two goals to give the visitors a 5-2 lead. Then Sports Sprouts ‘2’ win 10-0 On Saturday, February 2 the Brussels Sprouts “2” hosted a Monkton Beginner’s team in their third game of the season. Since Christmas, Brussels Sprouts youn gest group of players has been trying to find other beginning teams at their own playing level, to prepare for an upcoming tourna ment on February 16. This time they proved to be stronger than anticipated. Keen to play hockey and score goals, all 10 players contributed to a 10-0 win. Mark Hunter scored the hat-trick plus one more; Tyler Campbell scored two, while Mat thew Clarkson, Brittany Kelling- ton, Darryl Houston and Tim Harrison each scored one. Assists went to John Giousher, Ken Mc Callum, Joel Hemingway and Bryce Hunt. Most of the players took a turn in their own net, and as the excitement at the taste of their first goal hit home, some of the players started parking themselves in front of Monkton’s net, until coach Laurie Campbell reminded them that if no one went into the corners to retrieve the puck, there would be no one to pass it to them. With many lessons left to learn and skills to develop, they provided amusing and fun-filled entertain ment for their fans, who look forward to the tournament and their return to Monkton in three weeks. Paul Brophy scored with assists from Greg McNevan and Corey McKee at 7:36. With 10 seconds left Chris Bell scored into the empty net to cap off Wingham’s 7-5 victory over the Bulls. The Bulls will pen their playoffs Wednesday night at 9 p.m. against the Grand Valley Harvestors at the B.M. & G. arena. The first round is a 3 out of 5. Saturday the Bulls will travel to Grand Valley and game three will be in Brussels Sunday at 2 p.m. This week’s Bulls’ draw winners are Brian and Dianne Huether, receiving $50. Listowel team wins tournee Last Saturday the Radford Over load hockey club held its second annual Oldtimers Hockey Tourna ment. The one-day tourney saw six local teams go into action. In “A” division final, Listowel proved to be too strong for Port Albert, defeating them 9-1. Rex Warren of Listowel, who picked up six points, was the game M.V.P. In “B” Division final, the Clin ton Fleming Foul-ups played the Clinton Colt 45’s. The game turned in the third but an empty net goal sealed a 4-2 win for Blyth with thirty-two seconds left. Brian Mc Nichol tipped the puck past the Hensall defence and skated in alone for the easy goal. Game two in Hensall on Wednes day, January 30 was a different story, however, as Hensall out- hustled the visitors in a 4-3 win. Hensall shocked Blyth with two goals in the first minute of the game and increased the lead to 3-0 before five minutes had expired. Blyth finally got on the score board late in the period as Jason McDougall fed Brian McNichol, whose long slapshot dented the twine.
