Cranbrook Ladies Aid appoints new slate of officers The annual meeting of the Cranbrook Ladies Aid was held at the home of Mrs. Joe Smith. The president, Donna Knight, opened the meeting with a reading and Eleanor Stevenson gave an interesting collection of readings Euchre results The Hall Board hosted a euchre party in the Community Centre Friday night. Winners were: high lady, Beccie Ruppel; high man, John Subject; low lady, Isabelle Craig; low man, Mary Huether; table prize, Helen Dobson, Beryl Community extends sympathy Joanne Knight was home from St. John N.B. for the holidays. Clare Veitch, one of the elders at Knox Church, Cranbrook and an active member of this community for over 20 years died on January 10 in Listowel Memorial Hospital. with a New Year’s theme. The officers for the coming year are as follows: President, Freda Crawford; secretary, Yvonne Knight; Treasurer, Nancy Vanass; Auditor, Madelene Steiss and one other member, Vice President, Lois Hart. Smith, June Jacklin and Gordon McPherson; loan hands, Merle Bowes and Vera Scouller; tally prizes, Bill Dobson, Verna Craw­ ford, Eluned McNair, Wilfred Strickler, Dorothy Dilworth, Jean Rolof, Donald Clark and Bob Bremner. He was predeceased by his wife Jean “Henderson” in 1987 and is survived by their son Ross and family of Listowel, daughters, Marie and family of South Moun­ tain and Janet of London. The sympathy of the community is extended to them at this time. 130 attend WI Christmas dinner The Cranbrook Women’s Insti­ tute hosted a Christmas dinner in the Cranbrook Community Centre. One hundred and thirty people from the community enjoyed a turkey dinner followed by a short program and a Christmas carol singing. Who says community spirit is dead. The Grey Township Council held their yearly dinner in the Cran­ brook Community Centre on Satur­ day night. The Huron East District Women’s Institute meeting was held at the home of Mrs. John Vanass. Twenty-two ladies from the district attended. Mrs. Leslie Knight represented Cranbrook. People The January meeting of Court Woodbine M100 of the Canadian Foresters was held in the Commun­ ity Centre on January 8. Following the business John Vanass served lunch and Mary Ellen Jacklin won the 50-50 draw. Recent visitors to the Vanass house were Bill and Janet Mathie- son and boys of Corunna and Ruth Jean-Louis and Rick Hack of Mississauga. Mr. and Mrs. Stan Strickler of Innerkip visited with Wilfred and Laura Strickler. There will be card parties every Friday night for the remainder of the winter. WI answers roll with yesterday’s prices Ethel W.I. ladies entertained the W.I. members from Molesworth, Cranbrook and Majestic Women’s Institutes. Since it was a grand­ mothers meeting two contests were conducted to acquaint grandmoth­ ers with one another. The roll call “Prices from Yester­ years” was answered by all pre­ sent. The answers were quite revealing of the times gone by - examples - eggs for 25 cents a dozen, a tank of car gas for $5, a wedding dress for $10, a new car in 1915 was $500. These are a far cry from today’s prices. Mrs. John Smith is investigating the St. John Ambulance babysitt­ ing course for those 11 years and over. The cost is $15 for six hours training. The minimum number of participants is 10 and the maximum is 20. Mrs. Archie Jacklin gave her report from the District Directors meeting. A district bus trip will be planned for the Royal Winter Fair in November if there is enough inter­ est. June is W.I. month in Ontario and all branches are urged to do something special Janine Rollens-Grant will be the interim publisher for Home and Country until March 1992. The Ethel W.I. will again be participating in the Maple Keys Pancake Day March 24. Miss Doreen Suter and Margaret McMahon served a healthy food for lunch enjoyed by all members. HALL BOARD Nine people attended the public Hall Board meeting Wednesday evening at the Ethel Hall. Chair­ lady Mrs. Alex Cullen conducted the business and Mrs. Gary Boyer, Secretary-Treasurer gave her re­ port and all the monies raised were used for the renovations. The Hall Board now needs to raise more money to help with the operating cost for the rest of the year. Mrs. Archie Jacklin and Mrs. Harry Smith are the new Hall Board appointments for 1991 and 1992. Mrs. Dorothy Dilworth is to be the new chairlady. The secretary-treasurer will fur­ ther investigate the application of GST as it applies to the Hall as well the availability of obtaining special occasion permits.
