Belgrave Oldtimers play Sat.
On Saturday, Jan. 19 at 8:30
p.m. the Belgrave Intermediates of
1970 will take on the Belgrave
Midgets of 1970.
Both teams won the W.O.A.A.
Championships for that year. The
Intermediates won the W.O.A.A.
Intermediate “D” finals and went
on to be the W.O.A.A. Grand
Championship winners defeating
teams from all over Western
Ontario.
This hockey game will be like a
reunion for the teams. They played
each other 10 years ago before a
sell-out crowd in Wingham. This
year they will be holding the game
in the Belgrave Arena because that
is where the games were played 20
years ago. Proceeds from the game
will go towards helping to pay for
the new front being built on the
arena.
Coaches for the teams are Glenn
Coultes, coaching the Midgets and
Murray Shiell. coaching the Inter
mediates. Most of the players for
the Intermediates will be return
ing. Fans will see Ken (Hipcheck)
Henry; tireless Fraser Strong; slick
stick-handling Jim English and (big
man) Keith Johnston. In goal will
be Wayne Coultes with perhaps a
back up. Playing forward is Ron
(Flash) Purdon; (Slapshot) Bryan
Coultes; centreman Grant (Ham)
Coultes; Wavne Elston along with
(Gomer) Larry Elston, centreman
tireless Bob Higgins with (Kelly)
Ross Peacock and brother Lloyd
who might not make it. There will
also be Niel (elbow) Edgar along
with smooth skating Alex Blair
and, if not in Florida,’ the Giant
Keith Pletch, Keith (Plumber) Mof
fatt and hardworking right winger
Tom Black. This is the lineup with
maybe some minor changes at
game time.
The 1970 Belgrave Midgets play
ed in the TriCounty League against
teams from Belmore, Kurtzville,
Wroxeter and Fordwich. Those
were the days before artificial ice
and recreation complexes, so the
hockey season was shorter, heated
rivalries between the village teams
meant many exciting evenings
spent in the local arena.
The last natural ice arena in the
area in Belgrave will be the sight
for an exhibition game between the
1970 W.O.A.A. D Champion Bel
grave Intermediates and the 1970
Tri County Belgrave Midgets on
January 19.
lose 3, tie 1
On Dec. 29 the Blyth Novice
reps travelled to Elma-Logan and
battled to a 3-all tie.
After an end-to-end first period it
was still a scoreless game. The
second was much the same until
the 5:58 mark and Elma-Logan put
one by Blyth’s goalie, Allan Gib
bons.
Blyth didn’t have much luck
around Elma-Logan’s net until the
6:15 mark of the third, then Jamie
Black scored with help from Brent
and Justin Sauve. Forty-two
seconds later Elma Logan went
ahead for the second time in the
game. Blyth was not long tying the
game with a goal by Kyle Anderson
at the 4:01 mark. Jamie Black and
Justin Sauve got the assists.
Less than a minute later Jamie
Black scored his second of the day
with help from linemate, Kyle
Anderson. This put Blyth ahead for
the first time in the game, but
Elma-Logan scored with 40 seconds
left. The game ended in a 3-3 tie.
The new year didn’t bring much
better luck, on Jan. 3 a very strong
Milverton club came to town and
out-scored the boys 9-2.
Blyth came out flying and got the
first goal at 8:22, from Kyle
Anderson, assisted by Jamie Black
and Justin Sauve. Then the boys
seemed to fall apart letting Milver
ton score three goals before the end
of the first. The secpnd period was
end-to-end hockey with Bryce Toll
making some good saves. At 3:43
Milverton scored their first of three
more goals for the second period.
Milverton came out flying in the
third with only 25 seconds gone,
the put the puck in net for a 7-1
lead. Less than a minute later
Blyth’s Justin Sauve along with
linemate Kyle Anderson helped
score another goal. Milverton scor
ed two more before the end of the
third to give them a 9-2 win.
On January 4 Blyth "travelled to
Brussels and played in a very
closely matched game. There was
no scoring until the second period
'when Blyth’s Jeremy Van Amers-
foort got an unassisted goal at the
12:40 mark. Before the end of the
period Brussels got two goals to
give them a 2-1 lead. This is the
way the game ended as both
goalies made some good saves in
the third. Allan Gibbons was
Blyth’s goalie for this game.
On January 10 Elma-Logan came
to town and the Blyth boys played
their best hockey game this season.
The first period saw some good
end-to-end action with no one
scoring.
The second period saw two
goals scored by the home town
Brussels Novices
win 2 games
Brussels Novice team won two
close games to start off the new
year.
On January 4 Brussels hosted
Blyth and scored a tight 2-1 win.
All the scoring took place in the
second period. Trevor Wilson scor
ed from Joel Kellington and Robbie
Mitchell for the first Brussels goal,
then teamed up with Matthew
McLellan and Kevin Mutter for the
second goal.
Jan. 5 the team visited Wingham
for an exhibition game against the
Foundary Novice team. Again all
the scoring for both teams was in
the second period as Brussels
squeaked out a 2-1 win.
Trevor Wilson scored form Carla
Hunt and Tyler Bragg then got
assists from Ryan Smith and Jason
Armstrong to wrap u-' the Brussels
scoring.

boys. The first one was scored,
unassisted, by Jamie Black at the
7:20 mark. At 2:40 Chris Carter
scored with help from Kyle Ander
son. At the 2:35 mark the referee
awarded Blyth’s Kyle Anderson
with a penalty-shot, but Elma-Lo-
gan’s goalie made a big save. The
period ended 2-0 for Blyth.
The boys took a well-needed
break and came out flying in the
third. At 11:36 Kyle Anderson
scored with an assist going to
Jamie Black. After that things went
downhill, Blyth took four penalties
in a row and it cost them.
Elma-Logan scored four goals, to
give them the lead for the first time
in the game. Blyth played hard the
last couple minutes but couldn’t
seem to put the puck behind
Elma-Logan’s goalie. The game
ended with Elma-Logan winning
4-3. Bryce Toll played a very good
game in net. Their next game is on
January 18 in Clinton at 5:30.
