McNevan, Brophy lead Bulls over Grand Valley Harvesters Foiled again Brussels Crusaders Soupy Campbell is thwarted by the Grand Valley goaltender in a lack-lustre effort by the Crusaders Saturday night at BMG arena. Trailing 6-1 after two periods, the Crusaders rebounded with three late goals to lose 7-4. Sports Madill athletes compete at Hamilton games Members of the F. E. Madill track and field team participated at the Hamilton Spectator Indoor Games on Friday. The triumph for the young athletes was the Midget Girls relay 4 x 1 lap. Angie Yoon of Brussels, and Natasha Muschied, Julie Lisle and Ibukum Omole, all of Wing­ ham ran the event in front of 17,000 people, the same crowd that watch­ ed Ben Johnson finish second in his comeback race. The four girls put on the heat and came out of their contest with a silver medal. Mike MacKay of Wingham got a silver in the junior boys pole vault while Adrian Helm and Derrick Evers, also of Wingham got per­ sonal bests in the high jump and 1500 metres respectively. Jason Gropp of Brussels finished fifth in the Senior Boys Long Jump. Other Madill competitors who put in excellent performances but didn’t finish in the final standings were: Lara Fenton, Wingham; Ryan Finch, RR 1, Ethel; Brad Beuermann, Brussels; Allan Bailie, Wingham; and Tim Uyl, Wingham. The Brussels Bulls travelled to Grand Valley Saturday night to play the Harvestors. Grand Valley scored a short- handed goal at 18:38 as Steve Scanitti scored with assists to Rob McCory. The Bulls hit the score sheet as Brett Long scored on a pass from Ron Strome at 11:25. The first period ended tied at one. The newly acquainted line of Paul Brophy, Greg McNevan and Corey McKee recorded a total of 12 points in this game as Paul Brophy scored from Greg McNevan and Jason Baier at 8:39. Steven Scanitti tied the score at 7:50. Jeff McKee scored an unassisted goal at 2:28. Greg McNevan scored to round out the scoring in the second with assists going to Corey McKee and Paul Brophy to give the Bulls a 4-2 lead after two periods. Grand Valley scored at 11:21 of the third as Pete Isreal scored from Murray Skevritt and Chad Camp­ bell. However that was as close as Grand Valley would come to the Bulls in this contest as Ron Strome scored on a pass from Jeff McKee at 10:34. Twenty-nine seconds later Paul Brophy scored on a pass from Corey McKee at 10:05. Paul Bro­ phy completed his hat-trick at 9:49 with assists going to Craig King and Corey McKee. Greg McNevan scored a short-handed goal at 1:05. Greg completed his hat-trick with another short-handed goal with assists going to Paul Brophy and Jamie Gibbings with 38 seconds remaining. The final score Bulls 9, Grand Valley 3. Thursday was the trading dead­ line and manager Steve Coulter signed Samim Kulafofski from Stratford. This year Samim was again playing with Wellesley where he is averaging two points per game. Samim shoots right and can either play right or left wing. Saturday’s game also gave the Bulls a chance to cal) up a couple of players from the Seaforth Jr. D. Both Ted Sills and David Williams played a very strong game. Having several scoring chances, both play­ ers are very good skaters and impressed Bulls coaching staff. This weekend the Bulls have only Blyth Tykes win over Goderich The Blyth Tykes travelled to Goderich on January 12 and came away with a 6-1 win. Goals were scored by Matt Anderson, Cole Stewart and a “split-shot” by Jeff Carter and Derek Cook. Nicholas Courtney played goal for this game and did a super job. Next game scheduled is January 26 in Blyth against Zurich at 10 a.m. Since 1975, there have been more than 140 known cases of spinal cord injuries in hockey in Canada, with more than 50 per cent resulting in paraplegia or quadri- plegia. Blyth Pee Wees swamp opposition FAX BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Legion Pee Wees picked up two lopsided victories to start the new year as first they hammered Elma-Logan 11-0 and then they recorded their second shut-out in a row by beating Brussels 8-0. The team travelled to Monkton on Thursday, January 3 as they played their first game in the new Elma-Logan arena. After a slugg­ ish start, Blyth exploded with six second-period goals on their way to all-0 whitewash. Brian McNichol once again lead the assault with three goals and three assists. Both Christopher Howson and Brad Anderson re­ corded two goals and three assists. Jason Rutledge scored one goal and set up three others while Peter Craig notched a single goal and assisted on two more. Mike Salver- da scored two big goals, and Tim Cowan and Benjie Hakkers had two assists each with Shawn Hakkers recording a single helper. Disciplined play led to a penalty free game to start the new year as January is Penalty Free Sweep­ stakes month. Blyth then hosted Brussels on January 7 as goaltenders Chris Lee and Michael de Jong shared their second shut-out in less than a week. Blyth responded with a strong first period as they scored six goals on their way to an 8-0 win. Brian McNichol was flying for the home team as he made things look easy while recording another hat-trick including two exceptional short-handed efforts. Defenceman Peter Craig added two goals includ­ ing one on an end-to-end solo dash. Benjie Hakkers scored on a strong backhand shot and also assisted on Henry Bos's blueline drive that found the mark. Mike Salverda kept his scoring streak intact as he scored from deep in the slot. Game assists were credited to Ryan Chamnev. with two, Jonathan Collins. Brad Ander­ son. Jason Rutledge and Tim Cowan. Once again the defence of Craig. Toll. Collins and Bos stood up to all Brussels offensive assaults and they seem to be rounding into shape as play-off time approaches.
