Two Laotian young people
arrived at Toronto airport on
Friday, July 13 to begin a.
new life in Canada.
Hyng Ngo Dimh, 19 and
his sister Ley Thi Dimh, 16,'
are being sponsored• by Her-
man and Cornelia de Bruyn,
Concession 13 of East Wawa -
nosh Township.
They arrived from Bang-
kok after spending time in a
refugee camp in Thailand.
Although they speak very
little English, the de Bruyn's
son, Vincent believes Hyng
swam across a river to -escape
Laos. There were 30 children
in the, group .who tried to
swim the river to get out,
only Hyng and two .,others
made it.
They do•not know -crow Liey
got out of Laos to the camp in
Thailand..

up English quickly and Hyng
knows some French. The de
Bruyns have been able to
learn more about their new•
family tit ough Mrs. de
Bruyn'sbr ther, Harry Van
der Hulst wfftt speaks some
French. Harry is•visiting with
the de Bruyns from New
Zealand.
The de Bruyns applied to
sponsor refugees in March
before, the .pathetic situation
of the Vietnamize boat
people was well publicized
and Canadians started to
sponsor them.
The -de Bruyns attended a
meeting of thea a Catholic
Church parishes in Wingham ,
last January w n they
learned 'aboa. dnsoring
refugees from Laos who were.
living in refugee camps. in
Thailand. They learned: how
toLopply to become sponsors
through Brian ven Hove from
the Jesuit seminary in Toron-
to. Mr, ven Hove is assoc-
iated with Terra des hom-
mes, an Ottawa organization
which works through the Un-
ited Nations. The organiza-
tion works with Unesco and
specializes, in brining refugee
children . to Canada.
The de . Bruyns applied to
become sponsors through the
immigration department in
Kitchener. They were
screened by the immigration
officials before being accept-
ed. They had to provide
