Mr. and Mrs. Howard Thompson visited with Mr. and Mrs. Victor Gawley in Ripley. Mr. and Mrs. Don Robertson visited recently with Mrs and. Mrs. Thompson MacPherson of Teeswater. • A strange phenomenon occurred on Tuesday when large swarms of flying ants were seen in. the Purple Grove area. Weekend visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Elliott were Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Jordeth of Clawson, Mich., and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Elliott. of Fer- ndale, Mich. Mrs. Norval. Stanley and Mrs. Glen Stanley attended a shower in London for Sherry Smith. Linda White of Nor- thville, Mich. spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. John Farrell. Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Don • Robertson were Mrs. Goldie Huston and Mrs. Murdock McDonald of Ripley, and Miss Margaret Robertson and Mrs. J.C. McNab of Lucknow. Weekend visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Don Forster were Mr. and Mrs. Brian Keith of Toronto and John Forster of Lurgan Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Doupe were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Morley Scott on Sunday. - The community ex- tends sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Elliott and family. on the passing of Earl's cousin, Mrs. David Wharton of Westfield. and Mrs. Bill Former Ripley girl backpacks through Alaska After travelling for six weeksin the Southern States.4,and backpacking.. in Alaska, Corinne MacDonald arrived home to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. MacDonald of Ripley. She was . accompanied from Lake Tahoe by her. friend, Mary Harrington. They motored through Canada and visited one weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Ben Shewfelt in Dauphin, Manitoba, also with friends in Sault Ste. Marie, Mrs. •Harrington. travelled home by air, visiting with relatives in. Texas on the : way.. Corinne has resumed her teaching position in'. Toronto yesterday, having completed . a year's teaching exchange in Sacramento, California. She .is at Hill Top School in Etobicoke,,. not far from Toronto airport. In her travels this summer: she covered some nine thousand miles. Recently Mr. and Mrs. Lorne MacKenzie, Robbie, Susan and Heather with Miss Sandy Melville all of Unionville near Toronto, visited with his mother, Mrs. Violet MacKenzie in Ripley. Lorne, Who was on the Itaff of the former Toronto Teachers'' College is now in the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, Queen's Park, Toronto. Lorne'.s duties will involve travelling in Western Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. Lorne MacKenzie and family had a holiday at Lurgan Beach while here. Last Wednesday af- ternoon after reading the item in this column pertaining to the ancestry of the Pollocks, Mrs. Susan • (Jim). McNaughton of Lucknow sent over in the mail her book and pictures of the Pollok house in Glasgow and Fran picked these up at the Ripley Post Office. Mrs. McNaughton herself is Scottish coming over from the County or -Kingdom" of Fife. The Pollok house is really some mansion - three storeys, huge rooms, and great halls, and it has about a dozen chimneys in different places and likely connected to dif- ferent places. It was designed by William Adams in. 1747 and the building was finished in 1751. In- 1967 the Pollok house with its Stirling MaxwellCollection magnificent art collec- tion were donated to the city of Glasgow by Mrs. Anne -Maxwell MacDonald. ,Mrs.• MacDonald's father was the late Sir John Max- well, the 10th Baron and as he had no son the baronetcy, being of Nova Scotia, is at present in Abeyance, so the book' states. It has a 361 acre park comprising of beautiful large flower beds, lawns and woodlands all cared for by the _City Parks Departmen"t. Pollok. House and Pollok Park are open to the public. It also states that the Polloks Nave been associated with the Maxwells for 700 years. The Maxwells came to Scotland from Saxony, a part of Germany, being driven out by the Nor- mans. Mr. and Mrs. John Farrell and girls spent Wednesday night with Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rider at Point Clark. Mr. and Mrs. Don McCosh attended the 40th wedding anniversary gathering for, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Maulden on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Forster and Donna Jean attended the Stobo picnic on Sunday at Inverhuron. Recent visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Don Dore were Mr. and Mrs. Roger Wood, Troy and Shannon of Bowmanville, and Mrs. Wood and Davey. of Durham. Ken Martin returned home to Kitchener with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Martin after spending two weeks' holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Morley Scott.- Ruth cott:Ruth Thompson and Elizabeth Robinson of Lucknow visited this week with Mrs. Don Robertson. The summer holidays are over as the young people are preparing to return to school, New students include David Collins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cotlins; Todd Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thompson; Brad Rhody, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Rhody. Good luck, boys.
