AGAINST
GREENHOUSES HERE
Just prior to the
• opening of the pilot
project greenhouses in
Kincardine last week,;
Remo Mancini, Liberal
• MPP for Essex South,
threw some cold water on
the project with a report
he will be submitting to
Agriculture Minister
William Newman,
The report Is critical of
the ..proposed nuclear

says "the. government

problems."
"The rosy picture that
has been •painted for
Kincardine is not that
rosy at all," he said at a
press conference Aug. 13.
Mr. Mancini, in his
report, disputes " profit
projection figures worked
out by Peter Szego of the
Ontario Energy. Cor-
poration. He said Mr.
Szego's figures call for a
four -acre greenhouse to
produce 750,000 pounds of
tomatoes at a gross value
of $375,000 based on a
plant producing 20
pounds of tomatoes per
year with the crop selling
at 50 cents per pound,
Mancini used Ontario
Farm Products
Marketing Board figures
in his report to show that
last year one acre of
LeamingtOn greenhouse
produced 156,000 pounds
of tomatoes in spring and
fall which grossed about
$63,000 to the grower,
before heat and labor.
costs.
According to Mancini,
four acres of greenhouses
will bring in $254,000 a
year or about two-thirds
of Szego's projection. -
Mr. Szego, in an in-
terview Friday, said he
agrees "whole-heartedly
with Mr. Mancini that the
Leamington growers are
in trouble. The only,
