Lochalsh cemetery tombs restored
A visit to Lochalsh
cemetery one learns a bit
of the history of the first
settlers inthe area. A fine
piece of_ work has been
done by the cemetery
board in restoring tomb
stones of over one hun-
dred years of age.
Common names to
Lochalsh such as
MacKenzie, MacDonald,
MacLennan, McCharles,
McFoggart, McCallum,
MacKay, MacLean,^
Potcher, Black, John-
ston, and McMurchy are
all noticed on these stones
in the cemetery on the
north side . of the road
(Hwy. 86).
Such stones are learned
by reading inscriptions
a family of four
McKinnon .children were
buried Dec. 24, 1876.
My children four, they
are no more
They left us all one night
Their souls so true to
Jesus flew
Oh such a terrible night
This fine piece.of work
of polishing the stones
and placing them in a
cement foundation was
done by Mr. G. Guay.
under the direction of the
Lochalsh cemetery
board.
The first burial in the
north side cemetery was
in 1850 and the last burial
in 1936. This being Mr. D.
R. MacKenzie, father of
the late Dan (Rice)
MacKenzie.
The first burial in the
south siOe cemetery was
in 1853r and on Sunday
last R.D.' Ross was laid to.
rest in the family plot
there.
Through the years
many stories have been
told of the first settlers in
thi's community, and
many passers-by stop to
read the records and
remember. These two
cerneteries are main-
tained by one board of
trustees, who do a fine job
in memory of the early
settlers.
Sympathy is extended
to the Ross families in the
passing of R.D. as he was
familiarly known.
Mr. and Mrs. Irwin
Campbell and boys have
enjoyed a holiday to
Martin River north of
North Bay.
We are sorry to report
that Mr: Donald
Hamilton is a patient in
Wingham Hospital as a
result of a farm accident.:.
Mrs. K.L. MacKenzie
held a successful' auction
sale of f household fur
niture on Saturday last.
