and detention services
at Pinehill
BY DOROTHY SIMPSON
CHILDREN'S AID SOCIETY
The Provincial Govern-
ment had set up a task force,
to assemble detention pro-
grams across Ontario. The
Bruce Grey observation and
detention facility at Pinehill
is one of 13 programs
presently active. A steering
committee has been set up to
administrate the program.
They have leased three beds.
from the Pinehill group home
for observation and detention
use only. The facilities are
strictly for discipline problem
children who need immedi-
ate. attention.
The police, childrens aid,
probationand the judge have
the onlyauthority to place a
child in detention.. If an
agency places a child in
detention they must take that
child to court at the soonest
poasible time in order to
establish legal grounds and
custody.. A child can be
placed' in detention if., the
child gives the impression
that he will not appear at a `
court hearing. They can also
be placed .there, away from.
the community, if they seem
dangerous or to protect the
child from possible harm he
might do. The time a child
spends in detention can vary,
with ' the . maximum • stay
being 30 days.
The observation and de-
tention home is ruff by John
and Katie Van Eeken for a
one year trial basis. They
have already helped many
children and the committee
is considering expansion of
the , facilities. The problems
involved here are ones of
finance and staffing. John
and -.Katie have six group
home beds that are in use
constantly and have no room
for expansion in the Pinehill
facilities, Another obstacle
that faces the home is the
need for education facilities.
The 'school system is not
equipped to handle the fre-
quent rotation of students.
Separate facilities are being
considered as an alternative.
A report is made by the.
detention staff and given to
the judge so that he can
determine the help the child
may require. These children
are involved in the group
home activities, but must
have a: staff member with
them at all times. Their
belongings are removed
when they enter the home
and returned if actions war-
rant.,, An inspection of their
belongings: and body is done.
the first day they are at the
home.Dangerous objects are
removed and physical abra-
sions recorded. All of these
precautions are done for the
safety of ' the child and the
staff,
Detention has been a word
to some that means°the child
is bad and .cannot be helped.
In context, detention is a
secure place for a child that
has lost all respect for auth-
ority and has become hard to.
handle. These children
through detention facilities
learn restrictions can work
for them; Not all children can
be helped but many are, with
detention facilties like Pine -
hill.
Many people are finding
the . price of clothing to be
expensive so with the Child-
ren's Aid, Mrs. Bailey has
started the solution, using
her farm house for the
C.A.S. used clothing center.
it has clothing for all ages
and types. The prices are low

natural groundwater in the
rock with a special geochem-.
ical probe.
At the Chalk River site,
experiments are being done
to. see if water will seep
through fractures in the rock
from one borehold to anoth-
er. Boreholes are being in-
vestigated with radar and
electro -magnetic devices,
and pressure injection tests
are also underway.
At •Atikokan, five three-
inch holes are to be drilled to
varying depths into the Eye-
Dashwa Lake pluton, which
represents one of eight. dif-
ferent .,types of rock, to be
investigated during the first
