Install Grand Master
{
Norval Richards, Guelph and formerly of
Kinlough, was installed as -Grand Master of
Grand Lodge, A. F. and A. M. of Canada, in
the Province of Ontario, in Toronto at the
Grand Lodge Proceedings on July 18 and 19,.
Norval Richard Richards is one of four
sons and two daughters of the family of the
late Richard A. Richards and Annie L.
Patterson. Born in the hamlet of Kinlough,
he spent his boyhood years on his father's
farm near the town of Lucknow, in Bruce
' County. Over the years he has retained a
deep respect and love for the rural
countryside.
He benefited from the primary and
secondary school systems of his home com-
munity before pursuing further education at
the Ontario Agricultural College, then
affiliated with the University .of .Toronto.
Postgraduate studies followed at 'Michigan
State University.
In 1950 he married the former . Mary
Katharine Greer, and together they estab-
lished a home in Guelph where they continue
to reside.. They are members of Dublin
Street United Church. Their two sons,
Robin, a resident physician training in ortho-
paedic surgery, and Gregory, a graduate in
law, . both live in Toronto.
Professor Richards has been associated
with the University of Guelph in teaching,
research, and administrative capacities. At
various points in his career he has been a
Professor, Chairman of a Department, and
Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College.
His chosen area of interest is land resource
science where his efforts have been recog-
nized through fellowships granted to him tty
the Agricultural Institute of Canada and the
Soil Conservation Society of America.
Quebec's Laval University awarded him an
Honorary Doctorate in 1967. •
Having been initiated into Waverley •
Lodge No. 361 G.R.C. in 1943, he was
installed as Worshipful Master in 1952 and
again in 1953. He was appointed Assistant
Grand Director of Ceremonies after he
served as a District Secretary in 1956-1957.
In 1965 he received an appointment to the
Board of General Purposes and has served
continuously on it since: that time, While on
the -Board he has been active as a Chairman
of the Committee on Masonic Education, a
member of the Committee on Benevolence,
and a director of the Masonic Foundation of
Ontario, After his election to the office of
Deputy Grand Master in 1977, he became
President of the Board of General Purposes.
At the 124th communication of Grand Lodge
he was installed as the Grand Master of the
Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of
Ontario.
In Scottish .Rite Masonry Professor. Rich-
ards has served as presiding officer of Royal
City Lodge of Perfection, and the Guelph
Chapter of Rose Croix. He is a member of
Moore Sovereign Consistory; Hamilton, and
was crowned an active member of Supreme
Council in 1974. A member of the Royal Arch
Masons; Guelph Chapter, he was appointed

Grand Senior Sojourner at the Annual
Convocation of the Grand Chapter of Royal
Arch Masons held in 1979 at Niagara Falls,
Ontario. At the present time he is Deputy
Provincial Grand Master of the Royal Order
of Scotland.
Participation in Masonry has occupied' a
large part of our Grand Master's extra
curricular activities. He is anxious to express
his deep gratitude to the brethren for the
opportunity and privilege- of working with
them in the interests of Ancient Free and
Accepted Masonry, and to serve as their
Grand Master.
Norval's brother, Orland is a member of
Old Light Lodge No. 184 G.R.C., Lucknow.
His brothers, Jim and Ray, now deceased,
were both Past Masters of Prince Arthur
Lodge, Nod 333 G.R.C. in Flesherton.
Attending the Grand Lodge proceedings
from Old Light Lodge, Lucknow, were Bob.
MacKenzie, Jim Stewart, Doug Martyn, Bill
Fairish, Wallace Conn, Tony Johnstone and
