Search for nuclear waste
Atomic Energy of Canada
Limited has received perms-
Sion to start a two-year
geological research program
in the Atikokan area as part
of Canada's nuclear fuel
waste management program.
The research work will
begin as soon as contracts
can be issued. It will .involve
drilling into rock formations
. called plutons near Atikokan
to obtiain, vidence that will
help scientists determine
how highly insoluble nuclear
fuel wastes can be safely
disposed of deep in the rock
of the Canadian. Shield.
The work in the Atikokan
area is for research purposes
only, and does not mean
Atikokan is being investigat-
ed as a potential site for a
nuclear waste disposal vault.
The town . council . passed a
resolution .:1979 March 6,
allowing AECL to proceed
with the research work but
noted that this does not
commit Atikokan as a dispos-
al site.
Research has -already been.
conducted on different types
of rock at Chalk River,
Ontario and at Pinawa, Man-
itoba. The Atikokan plutons
represent another of eight
types of rock formations to be

investigated by 1982. While
only ane of the eight rock
types is being investigated in
the Atikokan area, some of
the other seven types also
exist in the region.
The process of selecting a
site for a demonstration
disposal vault will not begin
until the preliminary re-
search is complete and the
safety of the disposal concept
has been established. This is
expected to take at least until
1982. By that time, the
research will have identified
perhaps as many as 100 of
the 1,500plutons known to
exist in. Ontario's Canadian
Shield as suitable for dispos-
al' sites. Full-scale disposal
. will not take place until after
the year 2,000.
The, specific research, work
to be'tierformed near Atikok-
an, involves airborne, sur-
face and subsurface investi-
gations of faults (cracks)" and
inter -block areas (places
where two different types of
'rock join) in two rock forma-
tions -- the Dashwa Lake
• pluton, about .20 kilometres
northwest of Atikokan,. and
the Marmion Lake pluton,
about six kilometres : north- ,
east of the town. The work
will include about' 2,000
metres of diamond drilling, ,

which will likely be complet-
ed in the summer of 1979.
Follow-up work in the bore-
holes and analysis of the
results will likely take. a
'further. 18. months. Full tech-
nical results of the research
will be made public.
