LOOKING BACK THROUGH THE SENTINEL
John Webster of the 12th concession of
Ashfield, last spring lost a gander and
two geese. It was thought they had been
carried under the ice by the flood in the
creek and they were • given up for dead.
On Friday, when the chaff 4ouse was
being cleaned out, the three birds were
found underneath the straw, alive and
well, after their three months fast without
food or water.
The first came of bowls to be played on

Wetting the hair once or twice a week.
with a solution of salt and water will

activities. Here at Lucknow everything
was set for a most successful celebration
of Dominion Day. A most entertaining
program of band 'music to be followed by
gorgeous fireworks were all in readiness
for an immense crowd in the evening.
Then something happened, Just as the
bands were lining up shortly after seven
o'clock, a cold wind set in from the west.
and rain began to fall. The bands and the
crowd had to get under cover and there
was a general consternation. The rain.
wasn't heavy but it would wet light
clothing through and the bands could not
venture out. Later it was found that the
rain had destroyed the fireworks material
which had been put in readiness.
We are told a couple of women were
about town on Tuesday offering for sale,
books evidently the product of "red"
press of Russia or Toronto. The books are
said to contain matter condemning, off
hand, everything in the ,way of -, ligion
and government as well as we h it in
this country. As such material is
seditious, those who offer it should be
ordered to move on at once, though we
don't think they would do much business
here.
John Joynt returned home the end of
last week from a business trip to New

"smart as a cricket" for his age was

load upset and Mr. Inglis jumped from
the high side, fracturing his pelvis. Had
he slid down the. load he might have
escaped injury.
