The old clock on the wall of the beverage room in tt,e Redt•rees Hotel had supposedly been bought by a man passing counterfeit one hundred dollar bills. He had -not removed the Cleck,,po obviously his pretended purchase was made only to obtain change for the phony money. Who the crOoked stranger was, nobody knew exceptAngus, and he,. of course, intended to use this information to his advantage. He told Shylock Shaeffer, landlord of the hotel, that his price for finding the counterfeiter was the old clock. ";1'11 find that there phony 'dollar man fer yer, if yer'll gimme the clock," Angus told Shylock. "If you know anything about that man, it's your duty to tell the police, without any reward from me," Bhaeffer had replied. "If yer think that's'right, maybe its mi duty to tell the cops that yer dodging the income tax people. -An that yer a loan shark, an a boetlegger and a few more nasty things"' can bring ter mind, if 1 wants ter." "You're only jealous of me because I can make money," Shylock , said bitterly. *:'You're jealous because you can't. You never will on that sand pile you:call a farm!' ' Angus kept his cool. He was determined to get the clock. , "If 1 don't find that phony Money -man your gonna be out one hundred bucks, but if I find you'll be out nothing except that old clock." Shylock had ne idea how Angus was going to focate Phony Bill, but losing money to -him was like •losing blood.. • "O.K."Shylock said, "You got yourselfl 'a deal but only if you come up with the-Anion:nation to find that darned crook." • - , "That's real rich, that is - you tallith', that there guy a crook. 'It's all a matter of elementary thinkin', so it is deduction they calls it!" Shylock was becoming impatient with Angus. "Don't give us .that.bull shoot Angus you ain't iio Sherlock Holmes - just tell the sergeant what you know." Angus puffed out his chest. "I know exactly' 'ow to find 'im, and I.:11 tell yer, as soon as.Shylook there, promises ter give me the ctock when yous guys picks 'im up." "I told you I would," Shylock said in exasperation. "Yeah, I know, butt wanted you to say it in front of witnesses - alt nice an' legal like,- Angus said. "Alright, alright!" the sergeant inteijected. "The clock has nothing to do with the case. Where can we find the man?" • • Angus took another long lingering think item the bottle before he replied. He was going to make them wait -fust a little lorrger, besides he was, enjoying his moment of triumph over Shylock. He set the bottle down firmly on • the table and drew the back of his hand across his mouth. "His name is Cyril Chapman, an' 'elives at number 63 .
