The Lucknow Sentinel, 1979-04-25, Page 18Page 18--Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, April 25, 1979 Rabies clinic creates a busy day in Ripley Last Wednesday morning it was busy in Ripley, Everybody and his brother seemed to be in town for it was pig shipping day down at the stockyards and the rabies clinic at Huron Township hall where the cats and dogs were getting their yearly shots. Douglas Irwin spent holiday's with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Bert Irwin of Ripley. And also visited •!.with his sister Sheila -Mr. and Mrs. Dan A. MacDonald and family of the 8th con. west. Returning with hitn to Toronto were Mr. and Mrs. Irwin where they spent the weekend with their cousins. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Haldenby of ,Toronto. Mrs. Marjorie Reid of Ripley and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Campbell of Amberley visited on Sunday with. Mr. and Mrs. Murray Hewitson, Meredith, and Timothy in Meafprd. Little Mr. Curtis MacDonald spent a few days last week with his grandmother Mrs. Mary (Donnie) MacDonald. St. Andrews U.C.W. held a successful spring luncheon Thursday 11:30 to 1:30. The Happy Hearts held their Spring Dance in the High School Friday night. .The Harbor, Air Orchestra ,supplied beautiful music. The Lucknow Club and the Lions were guests. Last Wed. Apr. 18, Mrs. Elsie Forrester returned to their home on Malcolm Street aftera trip to Florida and then a visit in Eastern Ontario. On Sun. Mar. 25 her husband Ossie took her to catch the bus at Bervie. Later. .Floral emblems subject of horticulture meeting The Ripley Hor- ticultural Society ` held their monthly meeting on Tues. Apr.17, at the home of Mrs. Ewan MacLean of Lochalsh. The meeting opened with the singing of 0 Canada followed by the Lord's Prayer. Mrs. Reg Godfrey read a poem. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and 'adopted. The business and correspondence was dealt with by Mrs. Godfrey and Mrs. Mervyn Hooey. Roll call was:`answered by naming the first bird sighted this spring. Sugar snap peas were given out to those members wanting them. Mrs:.. Warren Wylds had as her topic, ,the Provincial Floral em- blem and how wecan grow trilliums. She also included the maple leaf - our national emblem. A contest was held to name the floral a bles of each province.' Courtesies were capably given by Miss Christena Robertson. Mrs: Earl Lohnes , was honoured by singing.., Happy Birthday for her. God save the Queen and singing Grace, and the serving of a tasty lunch by the committee in charge concluded the meeting. On Wed- nesday, the Liberal candidate Graeme Craig of Walton, accompanied by Johnny MacKay of Ripley, was here. Also his compaign manager Mr. Bruce MacDonald of Walton did part of Ripley on that same morning. Then on, Saturday morning the incumbent .. conservative candidate Mr. R.E. (Bob) McKinley of Zurich was in Ripley meeting the folks. Charlie Baker of Belmont was in Ripley for his yearly visit last week. He stayed with John C. and Mary MacDonald just west of Ripley and visited from there calling on friends. Charlie was saying that he first came to Canada from Brighton,. England in 1927 and that he first worked in London township. In 1930 he worked on one of the Culbert farms east of Ripley, the Tom Lowry farm on the 10th, the Bill Hooey farm back sideroad 20 on concession 4 and then for Hamilton and Annie MacKinnon on the 8th west of Ripley. He then went to Belmont to work on Don and Etta Willsie's farm until he retired a few years ago to live in his home in Belmont. Friends are always glad to see Charlie. _Deaths On Wed. Apr. 11, 1979, Rudolph A. Brandt of Metro Toronto passed away suddenly in his 72nd year. He was the past business agent for the shop Fitters Union Local 2679. Surviving are his wife Jean McDonald, one son Andrew and one daughter Kathy (Mrs. Tom Loumankis) and grandchildren Matthew, Jamie, Nikes and Alexia.
