ets are number one in Ontario
BY KEN HOUSTON
On Sunday, April 15 at the
Marmora arena the climax of
a wild weekend of hockey
and a long season developed:
The final outcome was a 7 - 7
draw after ten minutes of
overtime. Since Lucknow on-
ly needed a tie this gave
them the Au, Ontario Midget
DD championship.
This was the first midget
championship since 1952-53.
The game was a barn
burner from start to finish
with Lucknow always ahead
but Marmora always kept
tieing it up.
Lucknow was leading 7 , 5
with five minutes to go but
couldn't hold the opposition
back.
In the overtime Lucknow
killed off two penalties at
once and with every player
tired, they dug down a little
deeper to salvage the tie.
Pressure was so bad in the
stands that two .of the fans
sat down and prayed for the
last 5 minutes ' instead of
watching and. one parent was
found down in front of a
church looking up for a little
extra help from above.
Words cannot describe the
excitement after the final
seconds ticked off. The boys
were given a hero' "s welcome
back in Lucknow. With the
team riding on the fire truck
and part of the Lucknow
band playing, a parade pro -

This goad in the dying minutes of the third period gave the Lucknow Midgets
some hope but there wasn't time to win the game. The goal was scored in the
Saturday game when Marmara scored two third :period goals to win the game
4 - 3. The Lucknow boysreturned to Marmora on Sunday wherethey tied the
game after a ten minute overtime period': They took the eight point series
with thetie and won the OMHA All Ontario ,Championship.:.

The boys outplayedtheir

finger suffered. in a prior
series, Unfortunate situations
forced the team to dress a -.
volunteer forward, Joe

lessons in goal tending Joe

effort in a loosing cause.
Although coming in: sec.
and best on the score board'
;they were' rated # " 1 by
Godfrey fans and certainly #1
in management's eyes
The team . greatly appreci-
ates the assistance received,
from Midget ,players inprior
series and, congratulate them:
_on, winning the. Midget DD
All Ontario Championship. .
This writer has been invol-
ved with Juvenile teams for
some time and would have
liked this team, perhaps
more than any other Juvenile
team, to win a Championship
as they: have gottenthe
wrong end of .the stick their,
entire minor hockey. career.
However, fate would not
allow it.
After a year of considera-
tion I have decided to retire.
title
from further direct' involve-
ment with Juveniles and will
cherish the past years as a
rewarding experience. I ex-
press appreciation to past
co'aches etc, and especially to
this year's Kevin Murray and
Calvin. McClenaghan and
time keepers and statistics
men, Perky Arnold and Bob
Gilchrist, all the parents arid
fans who were by our side in
our bid for the champion-
ship.
Champs, too

ceeded down Lueknow's
main street. All of the boys
and parents were very ap-
preciative of the great turn-
out of fans.
To start the weekend the
locals went to Marmara on
Friday, April 13 and won 4 -
3 in a hard fought game with'
all the scoring done in the
first two periods. Then it was.
back in Lucknow on Satur-
day, April 14 in front of a big
crowd. The boys were edged.
by a gritty Marmora crew 4 -
3. This set the stage for the
final game on Sunday.
The coach would like to
thank the manager Doug
Eadie, the assistant coach,
Art, Stanley for their fine
work all year, the parents for
their loyal support all year,

Black and his assistants for
refereeing through the year
and -Jody Dennis for running
the clock all season. A great.
thank you to Bill Hunter for
the experience in cutting
through the red tape of ar-
ranging a series -and all the
rest of the work that usually
goes unnoticed.
Last but not least to every
one of the 18 mighty men
that did the work on the ice
all year to accomplish the
dream of an All Ontario
Championship, thank you.
The boys played their hearts
out and gave it everything
they had to come out on top.
