[Sentinel Staff Photo], The following is part of the submission by the National Farniers Union to `- the'. People's Food ' Commission presented at Toronto, Feb- ruary *2.4,1979. —We hope that your Com- mission will attempt to con- vince urban and rural people that in foodthey ' have . a common bond and ] should have a common bond and should have a common 'goal, that they can strengthen or destroy the . most efficient producersof food, the family farisn. We believe that we should treat food producing land as a resource, not as a commodity. Traditionally, we have al- ways taken for granted that there'would always be plenty of food in this countr}i. This may have been true when farm families, were the dom- inant supertntendants o andof food . producti The people .of Canada should' not be . mplacent about the da ~'s 'tvf becom- ing more a d more depend- ant upon imports Our. ft\uit industry in this country is be- coming strangled for lack of processing facilities, and by imports from canning com- panies who bought up Cat= adian . canning companies and closedthem down. The NFU is very concerned about the annual loss of thousands of acres of, prime farm land. Development of- ten follows the path of good farm.' land, leavingmore unsuitable land for food production. The NFU believ- es that the Niagara fruit land should be preserved, even if it means zero growth in this area. Consumers would be ad- vised to stop and take a look at the benefits to be achieved from a'rnarketing system for beef. Because of very low HUMAN FRAILTY Goodintentions are all right as far as They go - often they fail to go the whole distance. prices between 1974 1977 many producers ..started to deplete herds. Now we have a reverse situation and prices have changed from, too low for farmers totoo high for consumers. ' Value on quotas, traded among farmers • is an added cost to production which is unnecessary. It is a restric- tive element to young farm- ers. When a . farmer . retires the quota . should automatic-' ally return to the respective board. :• The NFU is concerned over, the . irresponsible actions of food:p'racessors and retailers In using minimal'tcreases in raw materials.as anexcuse to raise prices significantly. For. instance, the increased.. cost to millers.' (based on 2.2 bushels .of wheat required to make 140 Abs.' of flour required to make 135 - 20 oz. loaves of bread) amounted to two cents per loaf of bread. This increase: was translated Ito • seven cents per loaf at the retail level. Britain, Europe Rhine Cruise. 22 .days. Roundtrip air. Escorted from Toronto.
