BY AUBREY HIGGINS
My Friends,
The first time I used those
two words at the start of my
writing, I said there was a
story behind it; a fuller
explanation of why I. wanted,
to use them. Knowing full
well; the Republican Party
were not his friends, Mr.
Rossevelt used the term
anyway.
I feel the same way
because there are many who
will not agree with what I'am
about to write.
When Mr. Roosevelt start-
ed to gut the depression
licked, and factories started
hiring ,again, he had a law
passed that was called the
NRA-: 'I don'tremember for
sure, but I think those letters
meant National • Recovery
Act.
At any rate, every manu-

tacturer, no matter how big
or how small had to have
those letters on every piece
of goods they manufactured
from ladies hose or toys' to
the largest of machines.
If was something of a
profit sharing nature, but
after a time, with the help of
other largemanufacturers,
Henry Ford found some
loopholes in theact and had
it called; unconstitutional.
Immediately Roosevelt set
out to organize tabour `unions
in all lines of business.
An organizer would talk to'
the employees and show
them that they were not ..
being justly paid for the work
they were doing.
When he had over half of
the employees signed up he
went to the management and
presented his demand, the
same as today.
The difference was, they
were reasonable demands
the employer knew they
could meat without changing
the price of the products.
There were very few strikes
' and if there were, they were
quickly settled.
When it came to our
factory they picked our place
in order to set a pattern as
ours was one of the oldest
and largest in the city. We
had to go. on strike for about
two weeks before we could
get a contract:
Yes, I still ;carry a union
card, the only reason being
what it did for me at that.
time.
We were working ten
hours a day and after we had
finished and washed up to go
home, if someone came in
and wanted a small job done
that night, the boss would
pick one of us and tell him to
go back and change again
And get the job . done that
night, without overtime pay.

If we did not, we might as
well pack our tools and take
them with us, because there
would be no job for us in the
morning.
At stock taking time twice
a year we were requested to
stay until it was finished,
sometimes after 12. midnight
andno meal was provided.
When we went back 'to
work with a contract we had a
44 hour week, with time and
a half for overtime. We had
six paid holidays such . as
Christmas and New. Years

vacation.
As near as I could tell,
business went on the same as
before' as I think the employ-
er tried harder.- I was select-

demands that the company
could not meet because of
competition. So strikes were
called until the same ' de-
mands were made to the
other companies,
I don't know whether you
know or not, 'but when it
came time for a new contract
with the three big automo-
bile manufacturers in De-
troit, they would only strike
at one company. When that
contract was finally' settled,
then the other two just sat
down and made their con-
tracts on the same lines.
In my opinion, unions have
gone far beyond their origin-
al purpose and are making
outrageous demands that are
purposeless; because they
are demanding more than .
they are worth.
Th'e only reason 'every,
thing- is so costly to buy is
because the unions have,
forced prices "Up with their
demands for higher. wages.
I believe in prosperity but I
also believe that any em-
ployer is entitled to a fair
profit on his investment. He
should not be forced to raise
prices and in turn make the
general public pay it to him. I
do not think much of unions
as they are, today..
