The Royal Canadian Legion, Lucknow
Branch 309 public speaking .contest was held
at the Legion on Friday? evening with 13 area
students participating.
In the junior division, Paul Strong from
Brookside Public School, speaking on the
topic, "My Ten Speed", placed first and
Maria Dalton, of St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge,
speaking on "Slap Stick .Comedy" was
second.

Stapleton, St. Joseph's, Kingsbridge, placed
first with her speech, "Children" anq,Karen
Beecroft from Brookside.Public, was second
with her speech, "Family Picnics".
Competing in the junior division were

Commercials"; Jeff Gibson, Brookside
Public, "Hockey Sticks"; Heather Mac-

Joseph's, Kingsbridge, "Saving Energy".

Judges for the contest were Carol Bale,
Lucknow, a former secondary school teach-
er, Stewart . Beattie, a Wingham school,
teacher and Chrystal 4 Witt, Clinton, a '
former. elementary school teacher: •
The judges agreed in their comments that
the students should use a speech they had
written themselves rather than "a speech
taken froma piece written by someone else.
They also commented that the students
shQuld put themselvesinto their speech and
make it a part of:themselves. They` felt this
would be easier to do if the speech• was
written by the speakers,. themselves about
something.' they knew ` well. I.
The winners from this contest go on to
region finals in BrusselS.
