CONTINUED FROM P 6
sharply, the condition of the
sidewalks in front of some of
the stores. At the bank and
post office they were perfect-
ly clean, but when I got in
• front of some of the privately
owned stores there was ice,
snow and slush that made it
dangerous walking.
All the time 1 owned a
home, we were given just a
few hours to have our walks
perfedtly clean and safe. If
we did. not, a city employee
would come and do it and we
paid for it on our tax bill: ,
If there is no such law
here, there should be and it
should be enforced. But at
the same time one •would
think that pride would force a
store owner to keep the
sidewalk dean anyway, re-
gardless of the kind of
weather we have.
• BED CLOSURES'
Something else that, al-
though it does not effect our
•happy domain, bothers me to
a great extent. That is •the
talk of closing so many beds
in our local hospitals. Surely,
there are other • ways • of
cutting government expense
besides taking beds out from
under, the sick and needy!
Some time ago my wife
and I walked into a dounty
• building where we were in a
position to see the main
office.
• If I remember -correctly
there, were eight desks, two
were unoccupied, no papers
on them. At three there were
men,working and at the other
three, there were men lean.
ing back in their overstuffed
chairs, smoking, with their
feet up on their desks.
• There may be times when
all those ,men are busy, but
when we Saw them they were
getting our tax &liars very
• easily.
Does . this not seem like
poor management? Taking
this as a sample of all other
government offices, it seems
to me that if there was less
politics and more concerned
people in office we. might
have our taxes spent where
they would do more for the
voters who elected thbse
men.
It will take a concerned -
effort on the part of the
public, the same as two years
ago, to stop this thing now.
The control of votes is what
each politician watches and
is concerned about.
Right now, is when the
voter should demand what he
wants, not what they want to
give him.

. The speaker Dr. Philip
and Joanne McGary were
introduced by Mrs. Lillian
Boulger. They had been to
St. Vincent Island in the
Caribbean doing medical
work there. As doctor and
nurse they are continuing
their training in Ontario.
Mrs. Joanne McGary said
they were grateful for dona-
tions, and hospital supplies
•that they, carried by air with
them.
They wished for this new
experience and learned much
in Spiritual sense and for
themselves.
Dr. Katharine Hockin re-
tired deaconess who has
studied in England, Europe
and has visited many coun-
tries, author of several books
and a member of National
Division of World Outreach
and writes for Mandate was
the afternoon speaker.
She stressed "Human
Rights for Men, Women - and
Children".
_
A thoughtful rship per-
iod was led by 'East Perth
Region. A duet was. sung by
Mrs. Jean Eaton and Mrs.
Marilyn Kreuger accompan-
ied by Mrs. Eckert.
A successful meeting dos-
ed on these happy notes.
