Two per cent of the

according to a --survey -Con--
ducted by the ° University of
Guelph's Rural 'Development
Outreach .• Project.. This
.means a total of Mahout 260
people in six representative
townships surveyed.
The survey was conducted
in six northern townships of
Huron County., namely •Ash-
field, East Wawanosh- West
Wawanosh, .Morris, Turn -
berry, and Howick. The town
of Wingham and the villages
_ of, Brussels and Blyth are
in+rluded in the survey. area.
` The study .also showed that
ofthose lacking - transporta-
tion over half are handicapp:
ed and almost two thirds, are
over 65 years old. Over one
third of `those lacking trans-
portation live alone. All of
those lacking, accessto trans-
portation live in the town or
villages,,
• Transportation needs pose
a serious problem` in rural
areas for 'those,. who lack ,
access to- -a household ve-
hicle.: Bus service in most
areas. is not economically
p�o'ssible, and•distances make
taxi service too costly for.

The. University of Guelph
study report notes that four
segments of society have a
greater likelihood of being
`transportation disadvantag-
ed" than The general popula-
tion. These are the young,
the elderly, the poor; and the
handicapp.ed..
Tile study found .that al-
most two "thirds of the total
population in ' the study area
had -•4coxnplete access" to
transportation, That is, they
had •• a household a vehicle
available at all tunes for user`
Over a third were found to
have . "partial access" to
transportation. These people.
had ;a vehicle available .,to,•
drive sometimes, •' or could
ride as a passenger in a
family vehicle.
Among these With partial
access, the study found that.
.over one .third are under 16
years -of age and 11 per cent
are over 65. Half of them live
in Wingharn or one of the -two
villages. iii the survey urea,
and only four per cent of.
them are handicapped.

In keeping with this. prin-
ciple, the Huron Committee,
• composed of members from -
-the county •and: ,:from the
University of Guelph; . is

will - assist ,.te North Huron
community to helpitself deal,
with the existing. transpor-
tation
ranspor- -
tation situation. Particularly,
the committee will be seek-
ing to solve the needs of the
senior citizens and the handi-
capped.
The- concertedeffort and.
enthusiasm of all .local citiz-
ens in dealing with the trans-
portation'. situation in their .
- own locality will contribute to -
integratedrural development
in the local area, according to
those working in the project,
