Unit of U.C.W. elects officers Christmas concert held by United Sunday School WHITECHURCH-- The Uni- ted Church held its Sunday school concert on Monday even- ing, with the superintendent, Clifford Laidlaw as chairman. The concert opened with a carol and the Sunday school then sang the chorus. The chairman welcomed everyone. Recitations were given by Murray Gibb, Bradley Soloman and Jackie Whytock. A film was shown on life in the East- ern Country. A Christmas pageant includ- ed singers of carols, Joan Tif- fin, Diane Coultes, Janis Far- rier, Mrs. Clifford Laidlaw, Marlene Weber, Mrs. George WROXETER GORRIE -- Mrs. L. Johnston was hostess for the December meeting of Unit 4 of Gorrie United Church Women. Mrs. Cloyne Michel, Mrs. Andrew Edgar and Mrs. A, L. Stephens took part in the program. Mrs. R. Sweeney conducted the election of officers: Past president, Mrs. Gordon Edgar; Presilent, Mrs. Lionel Johnston; 1st vice, Mrs. Cloyne Michel; 2nd vice, Mrs. Raymond Gow- dy; Secretary, Mrs. Bill Nay; treasurer, Mrs. Dick Carson; pianist, Mrs. Harold Hyndman. Flower and cheer, Mrs. E. Carson, Mrs. Manfred Irwin; program committee, Mrs. W. C. King, Mrs. H. Hyndman, Mrs. A. Edgar, Miss Margaret Dane; quilt committee, Mrs. Gordon Edgar, Mrs. Geo. Dessert party held in hall FORDWICH-- The Christmas meeting of the Women's Insti- tute took the form of a dessert party in the community hall on December 12. The members, each with a guest, met promptly at 2 p.m. Mrs. Harold Doig and Mrs. Clarence Carswell convened the party and were responsible for preparing the dessert, dec- orating the hail and arranging the entertainment for the after- noon. Mrs. John Inglis of Ripley, a member recently moved from Fordwich, donated fruit cake, which was part of her 25th an- niversary cake. Mrs. Inglis was presented with a centennial rose cup and saucer as a parting gift. After dessert the ladies spent the afternoon playing court whist and during the games draws for inexpensive gifts were made. The singing of Christmas carols, led by Miss Minnie McElwain, rounded out a very pleasant afternoon. Thompson, Mrs. Elwood Gros- korth, Mrs. Ezra Scholtz. The Sunday school scholars presented a manger scene and sang carols. Piano instrumentals were given by John Gibb and Joan Tiffin. A comedy film, "The Peep Show Story" was then presented. A Christmas story was given by Colleen, Janet and Mary Lou Adams. An autoharp selection was given by Mrs. Ezra Scholtz, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Garnet Farrier and a recitation by Irene Wall follow- ed. The Sunday school then sang the choruses for several songs and the singing of God Save the Queen closed the concert. Santa Claus arrived and distributed the many gifts from beneath the gaily lighted Christmas tree and presented all children with a bag of candy. Wed 45 years Donations made by Guild members From all of us to all of you, we send our greetings and best wishes for a merry, old-fashioned holiday season. BAG MOOSE GORRIE-- Wes. Gallaway and Gordon Adams returned Wednesday from a successful hunting trip to Matachewan, having bagged a cow moose. ristm as 54 t4 ,? • g reetin gs GORRIE-- The December meeting of St. Stephen's Guild met at the home of Mrs. Harold King with a good at- tendance. Rev. H. Jenkins opened the meeting by showing and explaining the Advent wreath. Mrs. Olive May read, "God§ Love Letter to the World". Mrs. Harry Zimmerman gave the treasurer's report. New prayer and hymn books were placed in the church and choir books were ordered. Mrs. Thos, Ash gave an interesting review of work accomplished. In lieu of a gift exchange each member donated $1,00 for gifts for three Anglican members at Fluronview and the remainder was donated to the fund at Fordwich Nursing Home for a projector. Rev. Jenkins gave a reading on Christmas customs through the years. Officers elected were presi- dent, Mrs. John Stafford; treasurer, Mrs. Olive May; secretary, Mrs. Edward Day; press, Mrs, Mac Newton. Members volunteered to fill candy bags for the Sunday school children. The hostess, assisted by Mrs. Harry Zimmer- man and Mrs. Earl Underwood.. served lunch. GORRIE-- Mr. and Mrs. Frank King of Gorrie were married 45 years on December 14 by Rev. F.S. Finlay of Methodist Church, were enter- tained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford King on Thursday evening. Relatives and friends presented them with a blanket and a game of cards was en- joyed. A smorgasbord mid- night lunch was served. They have three sons, Glenn of Peterborough, Ross of How- ick and John of Strathroy; three daughters, Mrs. Wendell (Lor- ene) Gott of Toronto, Mrs. Robert (Isabelle) Featherston of Orillia and Mrs. Graham, (Marian)Telehus, Howick; and 15 grandchildren. We wish to welcome Mr. and Mrs. James King of Lis- towel to our community, They have erected a new home on the property they purchased from the Charles Maxwell estate. Mr. and Mrs. Wesley New- ton Jr. and Michael of Wing- ham visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fraser Haugh on Sun- day. Sunday guests with Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hart were Mr. and Mrs. Archie Robinson of Clin- ton, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hayton of North Bay, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Bradshaw and family, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Newton and family. Mr. and Mrs. Hayton, (Nancy Newton) are being transferred from North Bay back to Edmonton where he is employed with the Air Force. They left Monday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Richard In- gram visited Mr. and Mrs. El- don Ingram and family in Stratford recently. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Robertson, Goderich, visited Sunday at the home of Mr. John Hupfer. Friends of Mrs. William Taylor, R. R.1 Wroxeter, will regret that she suffered a brok- en hip in a fall at her home last week-end and will be a patient in hospital for approxi- mately three months.
