THE OLD IRON BRIDGE across the Mait-
land in Fordwich has been closed to
traffic due to structural weakness for two
years and is a bone of contention. Resi-
dents of the community want Howick
Township to repair the bridge and re-open
it for traffic. To resolve the argument a
hearing was held by the Ontario Municipal
Board. The Board has reserved its de-
cision.—A-T Photo.
PEOPLE IN FORDWICH are fighting to keep open the old
iron bridge in that community which has been closed to
traffic for two years. A hearing before the Municipal
Board was held in Wingham on Tuesday. The bridge over
the Maitland River is indicated by the arrow. It provided
communication from the left background on Louisa Street
to the business places farther west. Lack of the bridge,
Fordwich people say, splits the community. Anyone doing
business on the street at the left, or at the mill, has to
come back up to the cdmmunity centre, and across the
county bridge on the street to the right, in order to get to
the post office or stores on the west side of the river.

pal Board was the best way to
solve the problem.
SUMMARY
In summing up for the citi-
zens Mr. Mills suggested the
closed bridge is causing serious
traffic hazards; is an extreme
inconvenience to the people;
that the cost of repair is not
great, and other Howick Town-
ship bridges have been replaced
for no better reason; that the
council has been in an awk-
ward position, but is not nec-
essarily opposed to repairing
the bridge; and that the bridge
is important to the progress of
the village.
In his' remarks Mr. Shepherd
said there were really only two
points in question, traffic haz-
ards and inconvenience. He
expressed the view that the
traffic hazards can be reduced
by proper control and that the
inconvenience to the people
cannot be very great as a new
bridge is situated only a few
hundred feet from the site of
the old iron span.
Mr. Shepherd said that the
board must look at the $10, 000
expenditure needed to repair
and not at just the township's
portion. The gross figure is
important as we are all taxpay-
ers, he said.
Another item of interest
brought out at the hearing was
the fact that the residents of
the community had banded to-
gether to form a committee
and volunteered money to
cover the cost of bringing the
matter before the board.
The Municipal Board mem-
bers questioned the witnesses
and the arguments of counsel
at various stages, going into
the fact that pedestrians can
still use the sidewalk on the
old bridge and the effect it
would have if the bridge is
ever removed and pedestrians
have to go around by the new
structure. The chairman sug-
gested at one point that the
main problem seemed to arise
from snow conditions in the
winter, and expressed surprise
that the village trustees have
made no effort to keep the
sidewalk on the old bridge free
of snow in the bad weather.

Watering a Christmas tree
keeps it fresh and green. More
importantly, it reduces the fire
hazard. Cut off about two in-
ches from the base of the trunk
before setting the tree up in a
bucket or holder. Water in the
container will help the tree re-
main alive longer.
