WINTER STARTING
STARTS
WITH YOUR POINTS
Keith McClure
The attitude that "as long as the engine is running, leave
it well enough alone" is a boon to the tow-truck business.
If any one single thing could be singled out as the cause
of stalling, and hard-starting—especially in cold weather—it
is this attitude that neglects mileage-scheduled tune-ups and
the warnings of poor engine performance.
The most frequently single cause of both problems is re-
lated to the breaker points in the ignition system. They
work harder than any other component in the whole system,
handling the surges of electricity that pump life into the
' power generating process.
At 60 mph they open and close 16,000 times per minute.
As their efficiency declines from peak performance through
normal wear, the ignition timing becomes retarded, resulting
in loss of mileage and poor performance.
Breaker points must be installed by technicians fully
competent in ignition adjustment. Too much current pass-
ing through points can burn them out in a few days. The
mechanic must know how to check generator or alternator
output and test the resistor and condenser.
Breaker points that have been burned black from wear
and where the rubbing block is dry of lubricant or has been
ground away by the distributor cam, may fail to open at a
critical moment when the motorist was depending on ac-
celeration to get him out of a critical situation.
If an accident results—even a fatal one—the "post mor-
tem" is not likely to mention breaker points.

That she is dead, she is just

With a cheery smile and a

She has wandered into an un-

lingers there.
Think of her still as the same
we say
She is not dead, she is just
