When did Niagara
come into the picture?
A medical bill. A clothing bill. A car repair
bill, They all seemed to come at once, Jack
needed money in a hurry.
Answer: A Niagara Loan. Jack talked it over
with the manager of the nearest Niagara
Office. Besides getting the money, he got a
lot of good advice on budgeting, With a
Niagara Loan, Jack was able to pay all his
bills at one time. And repay the loan on easy
terms to suit his budget.
When you need extra money for any good
reason, you can expect the same courteous,
quick service at any one of 300 Niagara offices.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
in Wingham on Sunday and Monday
We have twice looked at
some of the new shows, both
Canadian and American, that
will be coming our way during
the new fall-winter season on
CBC Television. Now let us
check some of the old favorites
that will be back.
"The Public Eye" and "News-
magazine" will be two Canad-
ian public affairs shows that
will return next season, along
with "Flashback" and "Front
Page Challenge" both at their
same times on Sunday and Mon-
day evenings. "Festival" will
be back with some standout
premiere performances, works
by Harold Pinter, William Han-
ley, and Andre Obey, and mu-
sical shows -- classical and
otherwise, "Telescope" will
return, with interviews with,
among others, skippers of Blue-
nose I and Bluenose II, contral-
to Maureen Forrester, skier
Nancy Greene, and Stratford
Festival director John Hirsch.
Other musical shows return-

others from Canadian television
and the U.S., which you may
be following and will be glad to
see returning, are "Canadian
School Telecasts", "Country
Calendar" ,"Walt Disney Pre-
sents", "Green Acres", " The Ed

"The Friendly Giant", " Search

numerous sports events. Sounds
like a promising year, with
probably a wider scope of Can-
adian entertainment than has
ever been seen before.

If you have nothing to do,
make tracks to the nearest lib-
rary and find a copy of William
Shakespeare's "Richard III".
Then go home, read it, and
hike to Stratford to see it. I ad-
vise reading it first, because
you may find yourself a bit in
the woods if you are not famil-
iar with the characters before-
hand. It is a fine production by
John. Hirsch of the Manitoba
Theatre Centre in Winnipeg,
English actor Alan Bates,
familiar to world audiences for
his performances in movies like
"A Kind of Loving", "Zorba the
Greek", and "Georgy Girl",
plays the title role. As Richard,
the young prince who cannot
make people love him so is de-
termined to prove a villain,
Bates is believable and excit-
ing,
:
though some of his lines
are not easily audible, particu-
larly near the beginning of the
production. Canadians Leo
Ciceri as Buckingham, William
Hutt as Clarence, Mervyn Blake
as Derby, and Eric Christmas in
two roles, who seldom give us
anything but their best, are
again outstanding. And two
younger performers, Christopher
Newton as Catesby, and Barry
MacGregor as Richmond, the
man who finally defeats Rich-
ard, give fine performances.
Actresses Frances Hyland as
King Edward IV's widow, Zoe
Caldwell as Lady Anne who be-
comes Richard's wife, and Bar-
bara Bryne as Richard's mother,
the Duchess of York, are ade-
Swimming tests
held last week
On Saturday, swimming ex-
aminations were conducted for
Junior, Intermediate, and Sen-
ior levels with Miss Linda Stev-
enson as examiner. Thirty be-
ginners were tested Friday by
the pool instructors and ldpass-
ed. A total of 24 persons pass-
ed exams out of the 31 who
tried their tests in their respec-
tive Red Cross levels.
Diane Stainton, Paul Ber-
nett, Tom Walker, Doug Van-
derwoude, Carol Higgins, Janis
Ohm, Lorna Wenger, Cindy
Cook, Russ Jones and Mary
Shepherd all passed the exam-
ination for juniors.
Those who qualified for their
intermediate crests were Tom
McLaughlin, Lois McLaughlin,
Steve 'Watson, Roger Tiffin,
Mark Tiffin, of Wingham, and
Pat Hamilton, Charlene lien-
derson and Lorraine Boyle of
Lucknow.
Christine Kregar, Lynda
Paul, Ian Shepherd and Bonnie
Feagan of Wingham and Heath-
er Johann and Julie Roane from
Teeswater excelled in a diffi-
cult senior exam,
quate in their roles, but my
choise was Ann Firbank, a most
attractive English performer,
who speaks distinctly and lends
an air of grandeur to the stage
each time she appears. Eng-
land's two gifts to Stratford,
help to make "Richard III" a
success. But our Canadian stars
are no slouches in the support-
ing department!
