A great loss to the world of
the stage occurred last week
with the death of actress Vivien
Leigh in London, England. The
53-year-old perforiner was long
plagued by illness but, though
pale and frail, she continued to
work on stage. She was to ap-
pear in a new London play when
she became ill awhile ago.
Formerly married to great stage
performer Laurence Olivier, she
has been a top theatre actress.
When she came to Hollywood in
1939, almost an unknown, she
was given the role of Scarlett
O'Hara in the best-selling novel
"Gone With The Wind". Be-
cause of that role, she won the
Academy Award for best act-
ress. Eleven years later, she
won a second Academy Award
for her performance in "A
Streetcar Named Desire".
Movies were only of second-
ary importance to her, how-
ever, and she returned to her
first love, the stage, only
making an occasional motion
picture. Her last movie role
was in " Ship of Fools" in 1965.
Despite the fact that she left
Hollywood, though, those who
admire great talent never for-
got her. How different was the
talent that England used to
bring us, to that which comes
across the sea these days! Ob-
viously, today's so-called stars,
will not survive the three dec-
ades, as have people like Viv-
ien Leigh!
DO AS I SAY
Golf, the popular game of
millions, has an early history of
interfering with duty. During
the 15th Century in Scotland,
parliament issued three decrees
urging the "golfe" to be abol-
ished in favor of archery, then
essential in defending the na-
tion. These efforts to suppress
the game were unsuccessful,
however, for the Scots continu-
ed to swat the ball, even James
IV whose parliament had passed
the third decree.

Tuesday evening of last
week was the beginning of a
summer with sports. It was de-
voted to the play-by-play tele-
cast of the 196'7 Major League
All-Star baseball game from
Anaheim Stadium in California,
home of the California Angels.
It pitted the best players in the
qAmerican League against the
best of the National League,
and ended in a 2-1 win for the
Nationals.
As we said earlier, this is
only the beginning. CBC will
also telecast regular season
games on July 22nd, August 12,
19, and 26, and September 2,
and 30. So for you baseball
fans, there will be two months
of it, to be followed by the
1967 World Series, telecast live
and in its entirety, in October.
On other Saturday afternoons
during the summer, CBC will
telecast such sporting events as
the Pan Am Games (July 29th
and August 5th); and Canadian
Football on September 9th,
16th, and 23rd. Later, of
course, will come the Grey
Cup Game.

Looking to the future and
some of the shows you will be
able to see during the fall and
winter season on CBC, one of
the most promising variety
series appears to be one entitl-
ed "O'Keefe Centre Presents".
These shows will be shown at
intervals during the year, six in
all, with an impressive list of
talent. George Burns will be
host and star in the first show in
which will star Canadian per-

Cerson's
have 18-16 win
Wingham girls had a real,
showdown with Mt. Forest Mon-
day night and came through
with an 18-16 win. Diane
Warner had a home run and
third on a bunt while the other
team was wondering what to do
with the ball. That accounts
for one of their coaches, Fred
Tucker, formerly of Wingham
having to work. It just goes to
show you "Tuck", the 0.P.P.'s
can't win all the time.
The girls had a lot of fun
anyway - even if Cerson
couldn't find the ball under the
car and let in a home run. Pat
Zurbrigg seemed to take a lik-
ing to second base every time
up to bat. Barb Dauphin hit a
triple and the rest of the gals
liked the pops.
The Cuties are still on top,
so give them a little support.
The girls are really playing
ball. They are having trouble
to get cars for out-of-town
games and any available will
be much appreciated.
Playoffs are starting shortly.
Wouldn't you like to see the
girls come through?
This was a rained out game.
Jaundiced
Canadians
Canadians have yet to wash
their hands of jaundice. In 1944
there were only two reported
cases. Last year, 5,690 Can-
adians suffered from this virus
disease of the liver.
Jaundice or infectious hepa-
titis infects only man and is
spread by intestinal discharges,
usually by contamination of
food and water. The average
incubation period is about 25
days. Bed rest and diet are the
two most important convales-
cent factors. Physical activity
can cause a relapse after ,re-
covery and exercise should be
restricted for as much as one
year after illness.
Infectious hepatitis virus has•
yet to be isolated. It resists
pasteurization, chlorination,
heat, cold, antibiotics and ul-
traviolet rays.
So far the best prevention is
"wash your hands".
A life, jacket should be test-
ed at the first opportunity after
you buy it, and periodically
thereafter.
