*Local Scouts, leaders leave on 3-week trip to Maritimes
Excitement ran high on Fri-
day morning as 150 boys from
the Scout troops in the Saugeen
District gathered at the Walker-
ton agricultural park. There to
greet them were 50 Scout lead-
ers, five big buses, two station
wagons and two trucks, all the
travelling equipment needed to
take the boys on a three-week
trip to the East Coast and back
home by July 22nd.
For most of the boys and
leaders that foggy Friday morn-
ing was the culmination of over
two years of planning and sav-
ing. Many of the boys had
earned the $125.00 travel fee
by a variety of jobs performed
months in advance. Service
organizations in the area have
also assisted generously and the

Swimming program
is now underway
The swimming area has once
again officially opened with the
pool supervised by qualified
people for the summer months,
Lessons will be given from 9 to
12, Monday to Friday mornings
and the pool will be opened and
supervised from 2 to 5 in the
afternoon and from '7 until 9 in
the evening.
The water has been tested
and is clean and fit for use,
according to local authorities.
As well, the Recreation
Committee has opened the wad-
ing pool at the main street park
and this will be in operation and
supervised from two to four in
the afternoons.
The hospital nurse was try-
ing to speak via the intercom to
a patient in the children's ward.
After receiving no answer from
the child she said, "Jimmy, I
know you're there." A few
seconds later a tiny, quavering
voice replied, "What do you
want, wall?"
The summer playground pro-
gram opened for the season on
Monday, July 3 and for those
who do not know what the pro-
gram entails the leaders, Shei-
la Crewson and Anne Vath des-
cribe it as follows:
We divide the children into
two age groups, according to
their interests and demands.
Every day between one and
four o'clock, Monday to Friday
they come to the Scout House
at the west end of John Street.
Here we have organized games
and crafts. The main idea is
to have fun and de what the
Two fishermen sitting on a
bridge, their lines in the water
below, made a bet as to who
would catch the first fish. One
got a bite and got so excited
that he fell off the bridge.
"Oh well," said the other,
"if you're going to dive for
them, the bet's off,"
All children welcome to
attend summer program
children want to do.
Once in awhile we take
them on a bus trip to a beach
or public park. We try to have
special events for variety. In-
dian Day or Hobo Day are ex-
amples. On these days every-
thing we do pertains to the sub-
ject -- crafts, games and stor-
ies.
At the end of the sic-week
program we hope to have a Pen-
ny Carnival which will be open
to the public. Further develop-
ments will be related to those
interested. The funds will go
to the swimming pool,--wheth-
er large or small.
Right now we don't have a
large number of participants.
We hope anyone interested will
come and join in our activities.
We will be glad to have them.
There is no charge.
If further information is de-
sired we would be happy to
oblige. And visitors are wel-
come on the playground at any
time,
