Now that the Oscars have been engraved and put to bed on top of the fireplaces, it is time to consider where the Emmys will be sitting at this time next month. The Emmys are the honors given to television per- formers, in various classes. The nominees have been announc- ed -- some of them on Ameri- can shows that are only tele- cast on U.S. channels, but oth , ers we see or have seen at one time or another, so some ofthe stars we know. For best actress in a dramat- ic series, top runner is Barbara Stanwyck in "Big Valley". Her competitors are Diana Rigg in "The Avengers" and Barbara Bain of "Mission: Impossible". In the male categcry, nomin- ees are David Janssen, the Dr. Richard Kimble of "The Fugi- tive", Bill Cosby and Robert Cuip of "I Spy"; Ben Gazzara of "Run For Your Life", and Martin Landau of "Mission: Im- possible". Comedy shows nominated are "The Monkees" (Yick!), The Andy Griffith Show, "Be- witched", "Get Smart", and "Hogan's Heroes". Comedy stars receiving nominations are: (of course) Lucille Ball in her own series; Elizabeth Mont- gomery and Agnes Moorehead, who play Samantha and Endora respectively in "Bewitched"; and a U.S. series star, Marlo Thomas, daughter of Danny who stars in her own series entitled "That Girl". Their male coun- terparts are Don Adams in"Get Smart"; Bob Crane in "Hogan's Heroes"; Brian Keith in "Fam- ily Affair"; and Larry Storch of "F Troop". Variety series nominated in- clude the Andy Williams Show, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Smothers Brothers, and "To- night". Variety specials, "A Time for Laughter", which starred Harry Belafonte, Sammy Davis Jr., Sidney Poitier, and a number of American's great Negro stars; Bob Hope's Christ- mas Special from Viet Nam, Dick Van Dyke Special, and the Sid Caesar-Imogene Coca- Carl Reiner-Howard Morris comedy special. "Frank Sinatra -- A Man and His Music" was one of those nominated as best musical show of the year. And for children's programs, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang came in for a number of nominations. Among top actors nominated in single roles, are movie performers Al- an Arkin (he was nominated for an Oscar, too, for his role in "The Russians Are Coming", but lost out to Paul Scofield); Lee J. Cobb; and Peter Ustinov. More movie names are in the best actress list -- Shirley Booth (who has already won an Oscar), Mildred Dunnock; Ger- aldine Paige; and two whose performances we saw and en- joyed - Lynn Fontanne and Julie Harris who both starred in "An- astasia", a Hallmark Hall of Fame production. The Emmys will be present- ed on national television (not carried on Canadian channels) in a production televised on Sunday, June 4th. If you're interested, and no doubt you are in at least some of the cate- gories, try and watch it. 0-0-0 Was it my imagination, or is Sinatra getting to sound a bit gravelly-voiced? Seemed to me, in last week's "Show of The Week" production "Sinatra -- A Man and His Music", he was looking and sounding his age. But I'll be jiggered, it doesn't seem to matter! Sinatra is still Sinatra, and the old songs, at his worst, sound bet- ter than anyone else's. It was fabulous, hearing again, the old songs that helped to make him the famous man he is -- songs like "Nancy With the Laughing Face", ''Put Your Dreams Away For Another Day", "Come Fly With Me", "One For My Baby", and the list could go on, and on, and on. Just about any song ever written could be a hit two or three times 'round if Sinatra was be- hind the '"fnike"'. Each course cov- ers a seven month period. They have been in progress since ear- ly last October, sponsored and administered by the Life Under- writers Association of Canada. The object of the 2-year course is to provide better service to the public. Fred Nicholls of Wingham is one of the first year students. Corporals' Club Centennial sports The Corporals' Club of CFB Clinton is planning to hold a centennial sports event July 1st and 2nd. A number of events are scheduled for this occasion including a softball tournament as well as horseshoes, shuffle- board and dart competitions. Area Legions and Fish and Game Clubs are reminded that they are to advise the chair- man of the Corporals' Club cen- tennial sports program of their intention to enter prior to the end of May. Deadline for the submission of entry fees is June 15th. could well win the Emmy, as mentioned earlier in this col- umn. And even if one tragic day, the Sinatra voice gives out, I don't think we need to worry about Frank being forced to stand on the corner and sell pencils (though he has enough charm to earn a living doing that too). He is an equally tal- ented actor, musical conductor, director and producer. And he can always relax and let Mia bring in the loot, too. Good luck couldn't happen to a nic- er guy. 29 Chesley at Ripley 9.00 July 3 Chesley at Wingham 8.30 3 Neustadt at Mt. Forest 8.30 3 Cargill at Ripley 9.00 5 Mt.
