THERE ARE TWO DOZEN
WAYS TO SAVE GAS
Keith McClure
One of the major oil companies ran an ad recently on
gas economy. It stated prominently in the text that gas sav-
ings "depend on win) is doing the driving," They've got a
paint there!
Over the years we've learned to check some two doten
causes of excessive gas consumption. Half are human factors
and the rest are mechanical.
Since most cars are in fairly good shape, the human ones
are Usually more important. Needlessly fast getaways from
traffic lights cause 'Unnecessary stops at the next light and
REALLY waste gas. Racing ,a cold engine, especially in
winter; varying burst of speed with excessive passing—and others less important.
The Mechanical ones are most numerous. Like .a lot of
small leaks, they add up to rme big one. Dirty carburetors
out of adjustment and fouled-Op plugs head the list, Burned
distributor peints, faulty automatic , chokes and fuel pumps
add to the toll, along with ignition timing.
Dragging, brake§ and even automatic transmissions with
iiiatifficierit fluid heed been to be as WaStota. Alan Underitiflated tires on Wheels out of alignment arid out of balance,, High ongitio teniPeratitte and fan and gehetater
belte that are too tight. Weak pigott teiti!
When VOO bring you car In for soridte, have y000,0040
check the motet mechanical fedora, if they're tiOt doing it neW',At we've Said, the human part it the most Important, won
't tett anything to Cheek that,
