THUD - silence - no laughing just looks of disgust and more looks of dis- gust. I could have broken my neck but still just looks of dis- gust. She's giving us the signal and I'm up. Oh, no, my first mag- nificent goof. We're supposed to rise at the same time. Guess who didn't? Who else? Me, of course, can't I do anything right? Oh, well, we all make mistakes but this -- 0 gosh, I " forgot the mike! Quick Jean, grab it, slow; remember pull it off the stand slowly and lightly. No! No! It can't be true? It's stuck. Help! Now what, pull Jean .... CRUNCH -- echo, echo, echo. How could such a little bang be picked up so loudly? Have you ever heard a roar of an angry lion? Well, this comes close to describing this interruption ex- cept in a silent church it sounds more like the roar of an angrier lion. Looks of disgust, looks of disgust. I'll faint. What more could possibly go wrong? Now we're ready, we're singing! Hold it! Oh no, even in all our practices nothing sounded as bad as this or worse. Would you believe about an oc- tive higher or six notes higher than our beginning note? What- ever, it was terrible! Looks of disgust! Looks of disgust! I can just hear my voice screech next, but no, not me. I'll do all right, nothing more could possibly happen. SCREECH, no, not my voice, but yes it was! Looks of dis- gust, looks of disgust. Halfway back into the choir loft and I'm still holding the mike! Am I ridden with a curse? Sitting here with the rest of the choir, all the past few min- utes are whizzing around in me. How I wish I were an ostrich, then I could bury my scarlet head! "Amen" and then a murmur of voices throughout the con- gregation. Hallelujah, the ser- vice is over but not this exper- ience which will ever be re- membered. . . BY J. A. GRAHAM Mr. Madill received his ele- mentary education at Lakefield and secondary schooling at Lake- field and Peterborough and then went on to Queen's University at Kingston where he took hon- ours Mathematics and Econom- ics. After a year at 0.C.E. he taught at Port Arthur. lie then came to Wingham where he taught Physical Education and later Math. After being vice- principal for some time he be- came principal in 1950. Mr. Madill said he has en- joyed teaching and working with young people and that there was never a dull moment in his career, the high point of which occurred when he was appointed principal. Mr. Madill said the changes which are taking place in edu- cation are necessary because of the changing world of today. The reorganized program has been very successful in that it gives students more opportuni , ties to take courses they like and are suited to. With the completion of the new addition Mr. Madill feels that this will provide challenges and opportunities for both stud- ents and teachers. Concerning the abolition of grade 13 the principal feels that abolishing external exams is a step in the tight direction but that the grade should be retained with the number of subjects reduced. Mr, Madill's outside ties are mostly sports: golf and curling especially for the re., laXation they give. His aspira- tion is that the school will be able to meet the educational needs of the area people. He has no pet peeves but rather he feels sorry for those students who are not taking advantage of the opportunities at school. His motto: Put as much in as you can and you will get as much out. His personal com- ments to students is that he hopes that in the Centennial year the young people of Can- ada develop a greater pride in their country.
