Boy Scout Week is a special week for a
lot of people, For the Cubs and Scouts it
means a special Father and Son banquet as
well as a chance to thank all those who
support the Scouts. For the people of the
town, it is a chance to salute the Boy Scout
,organization for its work done throughout
the year and also to give a special pat on
the back to the leaders who give up much
of their time to guide tomorrow's leaders,
One of the biggest problems faced by the
Boy Scout organization, both here in Wing-
ham and in all other centres, is the constant
need for leaders. Not an easy job, leader-
ship demands qualities that are found only
in a few. Patience, understanding, firmness
'and leadership are all qualities which must be
present in a Boy Scout leader. On the
brighter side, the rewards are great. Corn-
pionship, the respect of many youngsters
and the personal satisfaction of having
achieved something truly important, all come
to a leader of youth.
Right now, the Wingham Boy Scouts need
assistance. We know there are many people
in Wingham with the qualifications . . .
Would you like to reap the rewards?
Boy Scout Week unlike many other "com-
mercialized" weeks in the year, represents
something truly important. February 22, the
high point of the week, is celebrated by
Scouts all over the word, marking the birth-
day of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of
Scouting.
Necessity, it is said, is the mother of in-
vention. And so it was with the Boy Scouts,
While serving with the British Forces during
the Boer War, Baden-Powell was badly out-
numbered by the enemy and organized older
boys to assist his regular troops. On his
return to England he conceived the idea of
a peacetime group devoted to the out-of-doors
and hence the Scout movement began.
In later years, in a message to Scouts all
over the world, Baden-Powell said, "I believe
that God put us into this jolly world to be
happy . . . the real way to happiness is by
giving out happiness to other people." Slogan
of the Scout movement is "Do a good turn
daily."
An organization such as this requires a
great many leaders. Wingham Scouts need
leaders desperately. If at least four are
not found in the very near future, the Scouts
will be forced to disband. The Cubs and
Ventures hope to carry on.
Are you willing to help????
