R. 2 Brus- sels, is the first herd to qualify under the Elite Herd Policy for Swine recently introduced by the Ontario Department of Ag- riculture and Food, This policy is designed to encourage swine breeders to es- tablish and maintain herds that have achieved high standards in respect to performance, type and herd health. To qualify as an Elite Herd all the sows in the herd must be tested under the Record of Per- formance Policy for Swine and 'achieve an average carcass score of at least 78.0, in 185 days or less, or a feed conver-I sion of 350 lbs, or less per 100 pounds live weight gain, in ad- 1dition to passing a type inspec- tion by a representative of the Live Stock Branch and meeting the necessary health standards of the policy. The Turnbull herd with an overall average of 80.4 on car- Try the new, fast, cars score in 168 days and with a feed conversion of 324 easily met the performance require- ments for an Elite Herd. Live Stock Commissioner, H. E. McGill, reports that sev- eral breeders in the province have enrolled their herds under the policy, and it is expected that in the near future other herds will qualify for Elite sta- tus. Herds that meet the require- ments of the policy in respect to performance, type and health will obviously be the outstand- ing breeding herds in Ontario, and so should constitute the best source of quality breeding stock for both pure bred and commercial breeders. more powerful HOMELITE XL-700! Wm. A. Stewart, Minister of Agriculture and Food, announc- ed last week. Addressing the Wallaceburg Rotary Club's Farmer's Night, the Minister said that the loan would cover a period of five years, with the first year free of interest and a low rate of 3 per cent being charged on the re- maining four years. Maximum Loan obtainable under the plan will be $5, 000. "During the past three years many Ontario farmers have suf- fered crop losses on one or more occasions and, in some cases, in all three years, due to wea- ther conditions," said the Min- ister, "As a result some farm- ers are experiencing severe fin- ancial hardship in meeting their obligations." The Minister said that the loans would be available to farmers who suffered a 25 per cent or greater farm income loss due to adverse weather in 1966. Application for loans may be made from November 1, 1966 to March 31, 1967. The loans are to be made through Chartered Banks. The government will pay the total interest charges during the first year to October 31, 1967, and will pay the difference between the bank interest rate and the 3 per cent low interest rate on the guaranteed loans during the period November 1, 1967, to Please Turn to Page Three Page 2 Winghatrt Advance-Times, Thursday, Oct, 20, 1966 Turnbull Herd Qualifies First, Elite Herd Policy A mother was telling her family of a new cookbook by a Scottish priest.
