THE HERDSMAN "30.50" CATTLE LOAFING BARN
Bldg. Plan No. LH-401
This economical, pole-type building will house 30 dairy cows or 50
beef cattle, plus straw and hay storage for same. The open front unit 9'
clearance allows cattle access. Large doors on either end allow easy machine
access for filling building with straw or hay, or for storage.
The Herdsman is a very strong building, with the trusses acting as
a lateral brace, as well as roof support. The centre row of poles act as a
convenient division for cattle and feed.
The 37'-8" x 64' size may he easily altered by the addition or sub-
traction of 16' bents. Later expansion is easy as 16' bents may be added
as far as ground levelness will permit.

Austin L. Parnall, award-winning corn grower of Drumbo, says

"the best thing
that has happened
to the corn business!"
"Atrazine is a good product to work with because it is so safe,"
according to Austm Parnell, who plants 600 acres of corn.
"We've never had any damage with it. In '65, we used Atrazine
with oil and sprayed around the middle of June when the
weeds were up about an inch. It burned off the weeds pretty
fast and gave good control through to harvest with no culti-
vations."
Stressing the safety of Atrazine, Mr. Parnall reports: "We've
never had any problem from residues when following treated
corn with soybeans on my farm."
Mr. Parnall goes on to say "In the future we will not use oil
with the Atrazine because for the best results I believe Atrazine
should be used as soon after planting as possible (early May)
for more moisture."

For the first time in Canada,
soil test results obtained in the
laboratory of the Soil Science
Department, Ontario Agricul-
tural College, have been tabu-
lated and summarized by com-
puter. Such a summary was
virtually impossible before us-
ing the computer to make re-
ports to farmers. The computer
became a necessary aid to soil
test reporting because of the
steady increase in samples ov-
er the past several years. In
1960 there were 16, 042 samples
from 5, 470 farmers. In 1965,
only five years later, samples
had increased to 57, 118 from
15, 569 farmers.
Farmers of Huron County
submitted the most samples with
a total of 3, 282, Counties sub-
mitting over 2,000 samples
were Wellington - 2,714; York
- 2, 475; Simcoe South - 2,435;
Norfolk - 2,363; Grey - 2, 281;
Bruce - 2, 2'79; Essex - 2, 099;
Middlesex - 2, 062; Perth -
2, 040; Kent - 2,013; and Ox-
ford - 2,002,
While Huron County was first
in the number of samples sub-
mitted, Essex County holds first
place in the number of farmers
sending samples. 856 farmers
of Essex County sent an average
of 2.5 samples. In the case of
Huron County, 584 farmers av-
eraged 5.6 samples resulting in
their top position of samples
submitted,
The chief crop for which
soil tests were made in Ontario
for the 1965 growing season was
corn with 12,981 samples. This
represents 22.77o of all samples,
Samples for hay pasture were a
close second at 11,171 or
19.4%. Other crops tested for
in significant numbers were oats
- 6, 194 samples; mixed grain -
5, 215; oats seeded down - 4, -
840; wheat - 2,883; mixed
grain seeded down - 2, 608; to-
bacco (flue cured) - 2, 222; bar-
ley - 1, 067; potatoes - 1, 026;
white beans - 899; tomatoes -
859; and soybeans - 737. In
all, tests and recommendations
were made on 27 different field
crops and 49 different commer-
cial horticultural crops.
Norfolk County is far in the
lead in available phosphate,
with an average of 729 compar-
ed to the provincial average of

Bruce County with 113, follow-
ed by Grey with 117. In the
