DON HOLST REAL ESTATE LIMITED Representative: Keith Fitzsimmons Wingham, Ph. 357-3840 "Rural Ontario Specialists" - Tax Increases Are indicated For Huron Co BY W, E„ ELLIOTT (=ode rich— Tax increases ap- pear certain as Huron County Council assembles for its brief March session, with the 'Uhl', budget as most important busi- ness, Prepared by Clerk- Treasurer John 0. Berry, in consultation with the finance and executive committee, it will call for a rise in the gen- eral purposes rate from 13,75 mills to 8,00 and in the roads levy from 8.75 to bring- ing the total from 15, 50 mills to 17,80. Action thereon is up to council, but in regard to the general rate there is virtually no choice; a substantial rise has been averted in the past two or three years only by withdrawals from surplus funds, and even so, it was found necessary to in- crease the rate by three-quart- ers of a mill to cover 19i5 op- erations, Surplus funds are now exhausted. Advantages of an increased levy for roads, with particular reference to provincial subsidy and "development road entitle- ment," were set before council at the January session by Coun- ty Engineer James Britnell, speaking to the report of the toad committee (1965). Discus- sion at the time seemed to in- dicate general concurrence. Council will be asked to confirm a debenture issue of $375, 000, bearing 6';10, to cov- er cost of the Huronview ad- dition. Highest tender for the debentures was from J. L, Gra- ham & Co., Toronto, at 98.1. Numerous applications by various organizations for grants were laid over in January to await preparation of the budget. Also to be dealt with is a re- quest from Midwestern Ontario Development Association that the county rake out member- ship at $5, 300. The roads committee, of which Reeve Donald McKenzie, Ashfield, is chairman, 'net here on Saturday.
