May you find happiness with your near and dear ones, and may heart's content be among your holiday gifts. Jack and Edith Walker and Family AND STAFF some of the newer concepts for the care of the mentally re- tarded. Much more space has been allocated to the day wards, recreational and training areas. There is a great increase in the amount of window space which contributes a bright cherry at- mosphere which certainly will be of benefit both to patients and to employees. The centre itself has only 240 beds and has been kept in- tentionally small so that it may better become integrated into the community. A start in this integration has already begun here with the centre admitting as day pupils the students of the local educational authority, an arrangement which is working out very satisfactorily to both the centre and the community. The centre will service sev- en counties, Bruce, Grey, Duf- ferin, Wellington, Waterloo, Huron and Perth and will admit as patients retarded children from this area between the ages of 6 and 16 who are am- bulatory. The programming for the care of patients will de- pend on the degree of retarda- tion and on other factors. For some, education and training will make it possible for them to return to the community and assume their full responsibilities as members of the community. To others, education and train- ing may fit them to live in the community in a semi -protec- tive environment and yet be able to contribute something to the community. There will however, be those who require care for the rest of their lives and who will never be able to function in the community. Here the aim is to train them to the limit of their capacity and to provide them with as re- warding a life as possible. The Out -Patient Department of the centre will assume an in- creasing importance as time goes on. Here parents of re- tarded or problem children may bring them for assessment and discussion of their problem. We envisage the Hospital - School of the future as filling the role of both a school and a hospital and becoming an in- tegral part of the community.
