HISTORICAL
NAVAL BASE
The principal naval base of
the British Isles is Portsmouth,
Hampshire, The town has exis-
ted at least since the sixth cen-
tury but did not become a na-
val base until the reign of Hen-
ry VIII. Its Royal Dockyard
comprises about 500 acres of
drydocks, repair basins, wharves
and buildings, many historic.
Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory,
is on view. The novelists,
Charles Dickens, George Mere-
dith and Sir Walter Besant were
all born in Portsmouth.
A business executive was in
the waiting room .on the Ma-
ternity floor of the hospital,
While other expectant fathers
paced the floor and nervously
thumbed through magazines, he
sat at a table furiously working
at a sheaf of papers he had ta-
ken from his bulging briefcase,
After some hours a nurse
came into the room and spoke
to him. "It's a boy, sir," she
said.
" Well," snapped the execu-
tive, without looking up from
his work, "ask him what he
wants."
