Gary Brenzil Paces Juniors
With 310 Single, 546 Double
One of the up and coming
junior bowlers, Gary Brenzil,
sure had that south paw under
fine control as he rolled games
of 236 and 310 to lead the Ma-
ples to a clean sweep over the
Oaks in the Intennediate Group.
For the Oaks, Bruce Boyd had
games of 189 and 205 and John
Phillips a 231 single in a losing
cause.

game against the Walnuts as
Don Collar rolled a 170 and
Ron Goy 192 but the Walnuts
came back to take the second
game led by Ricky Gardner
with a 218 single.
The Pines and Birches had a
real battle going and when the
last pin fell the final results
were Pines taking 3 of the 5
points with a slim margin of 16
pins. For the Pines Tom Miller

The Sound of Music" whenJu-
lie Andrews sings and dances
her way into your heart in the
20th Century -Fox Robert Wise
production adapted from the
Broadway hit of the same name.
Last year everyone was talking
about Mary Poppins and the
little English gal who made her
live, Julie Andrews. This year
the same star is setting theatres
throughout North America on
fire, with her outstanding per-
formance in the starring role in
"The Sound of Music" .
"The Sound of Music" began
when Richard Rodgers and the
late Oscar Hammerstein II
wrote a play based on the ex-
periences of the Trapp Family
Singers, written by Maria Au-
gusta Trapp. Maria left Nonn-
berg Abbey in Austria, where
she was training to be a nun,
in 1938. This is when the play
and motion picture opens. The
Mother Superior at the convent,
who realizes that Maria is not
yet ready for the serious relig-
ious life, sends her to the man-
sion of Captain Von Trapp, a
former officer in the Austrian
Navy to be governess to his
seven children. The Captain,
a widower, has treated his
children like puppets who do

The Reds lost to the Greens
3 to 2 even though one of their
bowlers, Larry Simmons, took
both boys' high single and high

Greens and took both honours
for girls with 106 single and
171 double.
The Whites, led by Lois
McLaughlan's 105 single took
3 points from the Blues. The
Blues put up a real stiff battle
as Bradley Simmons rolled a
75 single and 124 double.

everything as he commands.
Maria teaches them to sing and
to enjoy life and they come to
love and trust her.
When the Captain returns
from Vienna with his fiancee,
the Baroness Schraeder, and
friend Max Detweiler, he finds
his children singing songs,
climbing trees and falling out
of boats! The Captain, at first
angry enough to fire Maria, la-
ter joins their musical inter-
lude and asks Maria to stay.
The Captain gives a party and
it is there that he and Maria
first discover their love foreach
other, and the Baroness realiz-
es that she has strong compe-
tition. She persuades Maria to
return to the convent. Back at
the Abbey the Mother Superior
tells her she must face up to
life and return.
When she returns she finds a
warm welcome from the child-
ren, but also the shocking news
that the Captain and the Baron-
ess are engaged to be married.
But the engagement is short-
lived and in the most beautiful
scene in the picture, Maria and
the Captain are married.
When they return from their
honeymoon they learn that the
Nazis have invaded Austria and
have summoned the Captain in-
to their service. In their first
public appearance as a group of
family singers, they sing at the
concert hall, an engagement
of which the Captain had high-
ly disapproved. At the end of
the concert the Germans dis-
cover the family has disappear-
ed. They make their escape
to the Abbey, where the Moth-
er Superior hides them until
they make their freedom over
the hills of Austria.
The Broadway version of the
play opened in 1959 and play-
ed for a number of years. The
lead roles were played by Mary
Martin and Theodore Bikel,
with Marion Marlowe and Kurt
Kasznar in the roles of the Bar-
oness and Max.
The movie is of special in-
terest to Canadians, for it fea-
tures in the role of Captain Von
Trapp our own Chris Plummer,
native of Montreal, who has
starred in a number of plays at
Stratford. This is his musical
debut in a motion picture and
he makes a big hit as the stern
but true Austrian. His singing
in duets with Miss Andrews and
numbers with his family, can
be rated with the best, particu-
larly in the lovely song of his
native land "Edelweiss" .
Julie, in the role of Maria,
is tops. If she is not recogniz-
ed this year at Academy Award
Time it is only because last
year's win for 'Mary Poppins'
has Wrecked her chances. Her
journey to the Captain's home,
with a new Rodgers song "1
Winghari ,Advance*Times, Thursday, Dee. 1960 -- Page 9
Have Confidence in Me", is
absolutely the end; if any num-
ber ever showed her versatility
better, I have yet to see it!
Their seven children are per-
fect in their roles. One is An-
gela Cartwright, who has be-
come a real lady since her days
with Danny Thomas on his tele-
vision series. The oldest, 16 -
year -old Liesi, is played by an
unknown, but a very beautiful
girl. Richard Haydn in the role
of Max, and Broadway star Peg-
gy Wood, as the Mother Super-
ior add their own touches of
humour and tender sympathy
and concern. Eleanor Parker,
as the Baroness, is a little too
warm and appealing to portray
the scheming witch who tries
to win the Captain from Maria
If one were to choose high-
lights from the picture it would
be an endless task. The beauti-
ful scenery in and around Salz-
burg, where the film was made
on location, provided breath-
taking backdrops for much of
the action. The songs were the
same as introduced in the Broad-
way production, with the ex-
ception of two, which were
written especially for the
screen version. Old familiars
were "Do -re -mi" which was
built into a big production num-
ber with Julie and the kids,
"My Favourite Things","Climb
Every Mountain", and of course
the title song.

A FEW GOOD RULES
FOR DUCK HUNTERS
The Ontario Safety League
would like to remind all duck
hunters of a few simple rules
that can make this healthy, out-
doors' sport safer than walking

(1) Sit close together when
sitting in pairs.
(2) Restrict your field of fire
to an area previously agreed
upon.
(3) Never overlap your part-
ner's fire by more than a 45 -
degree angle.
(4) The law requires a boat
to be securely anchored before
starting to shoot.
