TICKET TO FAME
One of the most famous
names in history is that of the
Medici family, celebrated as
bankers and as patrons of art
and literature in Italy in the
14th, 15th and 16th centuries.
One of the foundations of the
Medicis' fortune was the pawn-
broking business. in fact, their
coat of arms contained three
golden balls, which even today
are the symbol of the pawn-
broker. As one historian put it,
the Medicis' ticket to fame was
a pawn ticket.
