The Wingham Advance-Times, 1965-10-21, Page 18Page 10 e- Wingham Advance Times, Thursday, Oct, 21, 1965 Strikes & Spares CQMMERCIAL LEAGUE Our new bowlers have be- come a real part of our League. Whether .or not they have re- moved their ear plugs, 'can't Say, but they seem to be en- joying themselves along with the rest of us, Noticed Ernie leaving those counter pins a few times. Join the club, Er- nie! Also noticed Louise and Carl playing ball halfway through the evening, but I guess they found bowling balls a little too heavy to play "catch". I think Shirley Storey should share that "Lion" with Jim Bain. Shirley took the high single with 238 and the high triple with 620 while Jim's high single was 261 and high triple 627. Team standings — Stamped- ers 21; Argonauts 16; Riders 11; Blue Bombers 10; Alouettes 9; Ti -Cats 9. Our thanks goes to Edith Walker for sparing tonight. I see John Finnigan has found that when the headpin is taken out first, the next two bowls seem to follow automatically. Big hole, isn't it John? 0--0--0 THURSDAY NIGHT MIXED BOWLING Mac Ritchie let off steam last week with an 885 triple and a 333 single. Hilda Brown had the high single for the ladies with a 264 and Gwen MacLaur- in had a 693 for the high triple. Team standings: Gw en's Go- phers 21; Sharon's Sharks 19; Dianne's Duffers 18; Audrey's Angels 17; Fran's Frantics 16; Dot's Dashes 14. 0--0--0 MEN'S TOWN LEAGUE (Late for last week) The Appollos, Moon Doggies and Jumpin Jupiters all picked up seven points, that leaves the Explorers, Geminis and Mer- curys all scoreless for last Mon- day night's bowling. Mike's Appollos and Ken's Moon Doggies are tied for first with 30 points; Bill's Jumpin Jupiters not too far behind, with 26; Ian's Geminis, 17; Matt's Explorers 13 and Mac's Mer- curys 10, Ken Saxton picked up the high triple with 784, followed closely by Bill Stevenson with 772. Bill, however, did pick up the high single, with 326 and Ian MacLaurin was runner up with 308. 0--0--0 WEDNESDAY NIGHT MIXED LEAGUE Well, yours truly finally took the men's high single, with a 245, followed closely by Charlie Perrott with 240. Char- lie picked up the high triple though, with 678. Dorothy Turner had a very good game, to take the ladies' high single with 260 and Win Carter pick- ed up the high triple with 601. The Cornets have 24 points; Corvairs 21; T -Birds and Fiats tied with 18; Buicks 17 and Pontiacs 7. Special thanks to Sharon W. - ley and Terry Nethery for spar- ing for us. 'Tis Show Biz A fellow who should have hosted a show of his own years ago, has finally made it onto network television. The net- work is CBS and the CBC here in Canada has obtained a num- ber of his productions for show- ing on Monday evening's" Show of the Week" . The star, of course, is Steve Lawrence, and his hour was seen for the first time last Monday evening. Steve first became a TV star on NBC in 1952, when he was lead vocalist on the Steve Al- len Show. It was there that he met a cute little brunette nam- ed Eydie Gorme, the female singer on the show. They sang swinging duets, made the crowd roar with their own brand of comedy, and in 1957, laughed all the way up the middle aisle and became man and wife. Both continued to record - sing- les and novelty duets. And Steve hit the top ten with such songs as "Footsteps", "Go Away, Little Girl", etc. Last year, he made his Broadway debut in a musical called "What Makes Sammy Run?" opposite Sally Ann Howes That play ran for 533 perform- ances. They have also worked together in clubs since their marriage, though they seldom perform together on television. Eydie actually accepts few en- gagements now, devoting much of her time to the two Lawrence sons, David 5, and Michael 3, The first of six shows to be seen this season combined two of the greatest, Lawrence and his good friend Bobby Darin, You're looking at the best of the young entertainers when you watch these two in action. Steve is not yet thirty years old and has been singing since he was 17. He is no Rock Hudson, but with talent and a personality like his, who cares? He has no difficulty carrying his show and making his guests feel at home. And in a production like this you see his talent as you never do elsewhere. He danced, he proved he could be a very fun- ny comedian, and he perform- ed a series of impersonations, all excellently. He belongs in a place like this, playing him- self, And his first show has made us look forward eagerly to the others.. By Vanni Lee Speaking of Steve Lawrence, and his appearance on a Can- adian show, it finally dawned on our home-grown talent that they were being 'passed by' — so much so that they threatened to strike against CBC. The net- work acted quickly, promising to utilize more Canadian ta- lent than they have been, thus increasing opportunities for more work for our performers, beginning in the 1966-67 sea- son. It remains to be seen whether or not they make good their promise. If they do, the entertainers should have taken action long ago; some of the best will not come back home now. 0--0--0 Two blonde beauties have shed mates in Hollywood. Sing- er Dinah Shore won her free- dom from tennis player Maurice Smith after a not -so -nice mud- slinging session in court, Danc- er -glamour girl Betty Grable, after 22 years of marriage to bandleader Harry James, was also granted a divorce in a town where many dreams come true, more become nightmares. 0--0--0 Faithful fans to Dorothy Ma- lone are waiting patiently for the day when she can return to work and be back in her role of Constance in the television series "Peyton Place". After undergoing surgery for removal of blood clots on her lungs, she lay near death in a Hollywood hospital for a number of weeks. The 38 -year-old star is really only now being classified 'out of danger' and will not be back to work for a number of weeks. Temporary replacement for the top actress is Lola Albright, the former girl friend of Peter Gunn in that series, About the only similarity between the two is the fact that they both are blondes, But Albright has be- come a fine actress and may do well in the role. She's come a long way since the days of 'Petet Gunn'. It will still be nice to see Dorothy Malone back at work and well again. She and ex- husband Jacques Bergerac have battled for many months over the custody of their two young daughters, so this has been a tough year for her, Let's hope her luck changes. Bali Season Has Ended, took Forward to Hockey BELMORE—The final game in the Tri -County Softball League was played on Thanks- giving Day in Wingharn Park, Moncrieff won the victory by a score of 8-5, thus ending the best -of -seven series and shut- ting our local team out in the cold, For the home boys, Mac Eadie smashed a home run, with other top hitters being Don Ea- die with three, and Keith Mul- vey, Pete Newans, Russell Press, Murray Mulvey and Char lie Eadie with two each. As was mentioned last week, the village is proud of the ream despite the loss. It has been a fine season and they represent- ed the community well. The team would like to thank all the supporters who at- tended the games and urged them on with special thanks ac - Corded Bill Mulvey, manager of the team, and coach Ken Dickson, And with the final game of the season past history, don't be surprised if you see some bloke sitting on the back doorstep sharpening his skates! Before you know it, the hockey season will be underway! activities B PACK All leaders were in attend* ance for last week's meeting and the opening Grand Howl was very impressive done in the dark. Each sixer was responsi- ble for inspection of his own six. Akela reminded the boys that short pants are "uniform" until further notice, Kim and Shere Khan led two exciting relays with the green and yellow sixes coming out on top, The boys estimated the period of a minute for Akela and it wasnoted that some min- utes were scarcely ten seconds long. New Churns learned the Cub Promise and the otherboys had a session of crafts, They made a wall plaque bearing the promise, New Chums are Earl Thompe son and Lawrence Norman. 0--0--0 A PACK A New Chum, Charlie klop- per was welcomed last weekaf* ter the opening exercises with Murray Leggatt leading the Grand l-iowl.
