Talk Connecting
Link Improvement
With Department
Members of the public works
department of the town council
and two representatives from
the Department of Highways
met last week to consider what
work the town will request on
that portion of Highway 86
which is inside the town limits.
When the new diversion is
built south of town this mile -
long stretch of highway which
includes portions of Diagonal
Road and Victoria Street, will
revert to the town. At the pre-
sent time the Department of
Highways maintains the road as
a connecting link. However,
before it is turned back to the
town it will be brought up to a
high standard of construction.
Burns Ross of Goderich, con-
sulting engineer, has reviewed
the necessary work for the town.
Representing the Department
were Walter Westlake, ofStrat-
ford and Rugge Jenkins, of Lon-
don, a member of the design
board for the department.
The draft plan calls for re-
surfacing the new curbs where
needed, as well as otherminor
improvements.
Hits Two Calves
A mishap on the 1st conces-
sion of Morris Township, which
could have had worse results,
occurred early Saturday morn-
ing when Neil Edgar struck two
calves. The animals were own-
ed by John Glousher.
The calves were black and
the night was foggy, so that the
driver did not have much op-
portunity to see the beasts. One
had to he destroyed and dam-
age to the car was estimated at
$200, 00.
Both the driver and Mr.
Glousher have an R. R. 4, Wing -
barn address.

Convict Youth of

W. Girvin Westlake, 20, of
Willowdale, was fined $200 and
costs or 30 days in jail last
Wednesday when he appeared in
magistrate's court here on a
careless driving charge.
Westlake was the driver of
one of the cars involved in a
two -car collision near Zetland
Bridge, west of Wingham, on
August 22 when five members
of one family were killed.
A charge of dangerous driv-
ing was dropped when Crown
Attorney William Cochrane
elected to go with the careless
driving charge. The young man
was given two weeks to pay the
fine.
Injured in the car driven by
Westlake were H. Craig Mil-
lard and Miss Caroline Adair,
both of Willowdale.
Robert John Thomas Smith
of Sault Ste. Marie, driver of
the other car, was killed in the
accident. His wife, the former
Etta Belle MacDonald was the
only survivor in the Smith car.
Her father, John Alexander
MacDonald, her brother,
Thomas Nelson MacDonald and
sisters, Miss Florence Jean and
Miss Margaret MacDonald all
died in the crash.
