The Wingham Advance-Times, 1965-10-14, Page 18BEAVER LUMBER Page 19 ,- Wingham Advance+ -Times, Thursday, Oct. 1^, 1965 Tis Show Biz There are Van Dykes and there are Van Dykes! The paint ings do absolutely nothing for tine, but the comedian can break me up at the drop of a hat, or by speaking a line that isn't even meant to be funny. Why Canadian television ignor- ed the U.S.-produced series, The Dick Van. Dyke Show, for so long and why the Canadian public allowed it to, beatsrne! Since the day he first filmed a pilot for his network he has been receiving nothing but praise and awards for his efforts. And every year, like clock- work, his show, his directors, writers, and co-star Mary Ty- ler Moore, join him in deliver- ing their thank-yous for their TV Emmys, awarded for tele- vision excellence, Dick Van Dyke is a fellow who became a star -- but with- out being a part of "The Sys- tem". ys-tem". Unlike most of Holly- wood's inhabitants who wear million -dollar clothes, attend every cocktail party and pre- miere in town (taking their own photographer with them), and would set their own pants on fire if they thought it would get their names in the newspapers and make them stars, the Van Dykes live simply. Dick and his wife Marge seldom attend par- ties and their four children, Chris 15, Barry 14, Stacy 10, and Carrie Beth 4, are seldom photographed; in fact, their life is fairly normal considering that he is one of the biggest stars in the business and makes enough money to live like a king. At 38, Dick looks much younger and talks and acts like a teenager. He is as easy-going in person as he is on his show and has countless numbers of friends in a town where many don't know the meaning of the word. He first caught the eyes of Hollywood producers when he starred in the hit Broadway tly BY Ygqql l4R Vomii e play "Bye, Bye, Birdie" in 1960 and hence went west to star on TV. Movies beckoned, he repeated his Broadway role in the movie version of 'Birdie', and though some people were too busy to notice played a starring role in a Walt Disney flick called "Maty Poppins". As far as I was concerned, he left the star, Julie Andrews, far behind and walked away with the picture. Every movie he has made has been a hit (he has done four), and he is constant- ly being bombarded with scripts for future movie work. No doubt if he wished, he could be be- fore the cameras every day 'til 1980 and his popularity would only increase. His television series was created by comedy writerCarl Reiner and is based on Reiner's own life, He also stars as Dick's boss in the series. It is to show the viewing public the behind - the -scenes life of a writer of TV jokes, and I suppose, prove that not every day is a riot as one might think. His co-stars and co-workers are Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam, and when the three of them are to- gether, making with the quips like laughing was going out of style, you really forget you are not there in the office with them, listening to them adlib (which I think they are doing much of the time), His sweet wife Laura is played superbly by Mary Tyler Moore, and if yottre going to be a comedy writer she's the kind of wife to have! She is the heart -as -big -as -all - outdoors, scatter -brain type, who by simply 'talking off the top of her head', can supply him with enough material for an entire show! A real doll, and they complement each other like bacon and eggs! But the star of the show is still Van Dyke, and the half-hour is nev- er funnier than when he is on camera alone. What a refresh- ing talent! It will lighten your entire week if you spend a half- hour watching him! 0--0--0 "Petticoat Junction" has re- turned for another season, but with a difference. Bea Bene- daret is still the strong and steady Kate Bradley who tries to run the Shady Rest Hotel; Edgar Buchanan as Uncle Joe is still the lazy slob who is under the impression that he has made the Hotel and Kate what they are. Floyd and Charley, old favourites Rufe Davis and Smi- ley Burnette, are still backrun- ning the Cannonball, and even the cute wee pooch is back, The change is in Kate's daughters, Billy Jo, Bobbi Joe, and Betty Jo. Jeannine Riley and Pat Woodell, who played the eldest two, begged out of the series at the end of last sea- son, so rather than make ex- cuses that they had both 'gone east', (like 'Bonanza' did with Adam Cartright) they were re- placed. Bunilia Hutton is the new Billy Jo, a cute blonde who could be even better than Riley in the part, and who could go places in the business. Then we have Lori Saunders who tried to walk into Woodell's shoes and can't begin to fill them. She is not nearly as lovely as Miss Woodell and has as much per- sonality as a can of tuna. Per- haps with luck, Bobbi Jo, who is the brainy one of the Bradley family, will finish school and go the Europe to study law so we'll be rid of her! The petite little doll whom I always did think was cutest of all, Linda Kaye as Betty Jo, is still with the show and should have an even larger following now, Pat Woodell also has a fabu- lous singing voice which the show will miss; she is no doubt branching out into other things where she can better make use of her versatility. In private life, she is the wife of Gaty Clarke, star of 'The Virginian'. it ng to any, one?. youi envelope should show... 1 The name of the person you are addressing. 2 The street number, street name, or post office box number, apartment or business block, suite number, if any. 3 City, town or village, and postal zone, if in use, province, too. 4 Your name and your complete address in the upper left corner.
